Under Construction nets a new first ever for me...

Pete in MI

New member
I drove by a piece of property I had tried to detect on before and then it was just too trashy to find much. As I drove by this park which used to be the location of the oldest hotel in Houghton Lake I knew I had to get there - fast. Several pieces of heavy equipment were in operation on this park which is under construction.

I knew I had a limited window of opportunity. So after 5 PM I went there and all the construction had stopped for the day. It was time to do as much as I could.

While I was digging finds my detecting buddy Ken pulled in to the parking lot. He was just getting home from work and still in his uniform (Sheriff Corrections Officer).. He asked if I had found anything. I produced several coins and he looked at the dates. He was blown away by the Wheaties...2 - 1916, a 1919, and several others dates and then he asked "what is this thing?"

He was totally shocked that I found a Chinese coin. I was shocked and over joyed at the same time as this is the first Chinese coin I have ever found.

I told Ken to go get his detector and come join me. Unfortunately, he had other plans waiting on him at home and had to depart and not come detect.

No sooner did Ken leave I started detecting again and got a signal. When I went to put the digger in the ground it hit glass just under the surface. It was the antique bottle in the picture. It is one of those with the seam along the side. Under the bottle was one of the Wheat pennies. Found what might be a pendant but think it was an ear ring - an old one. One item was a fired bullet lead...flattened by whatever (or whoever) it had hit. Maybe a 25 or 32 caliber.

Found a door knob, some valve type thingy and other things...like a buried power cable that the 'flag' guy didn't put flags on - so I uncovered it and left it exposed so the heavy equipment guys can see it before hitting it.

Total count was 5 Wheaties, one 1970 (rusted) Lincoln Memorial, 2 nickels - one might be a 1938 0r 1988 (wish I knew where my loupe and magnifying glass are) and the Chinese coin and antique bottle.

I went detecting the day before but have yet to get the pics together yet to post the Wheaties and the Stainless Steel Gravy Ladel I found.

Sure glad winter is over!!!

Mike, I have found several of the Chinese coins at the house next to mine. The house was built in 1880 and was used as a boarding house for the railroad workers that worked putting the railroad through our town. I was told that there were several Chinese workers that worked the rails in our area. That would explain why I found all of those coins in the yard. At first I thought they were some kind of trinket and then I did the research on them. I have also found some early 1900's silver Canadian coins, and two German coins there too.

Good going Pete to be able to do some :detecting: in a construction site! Doing good and I, too, have found the square hole type of coins! Go get some more while you can! :) God Bless! Betty

Pete nice finds. My brother brought back a collection of those coins from Vietnam. Those are extremely old. Nice old bottle.

Wow! Uncanny! Yesterday I found the same style Chinese Coin at a Construction Site which was also over an old hotel. I hit this site to do some research and BOOM! yours was the first post I hit. I did some other research and saw the coin was made from the mid 1870's to just before 1910. This coincides with when our railroad came through town, as Randy had theorized. I have always loved history, and this little coin provides a glimpse into the past. Thanks Guys!

Must be a God thing. Can't all be coincidence. Thanks for the info on time frame. I knew that railroads had hired Chinese to do things like cooking and laundry for the railroad crews. This is the first sign of Chinese in this area....other than our Chinese buffet restaurants hahaha.

I don't know of any railroads running through Houghton Lake but do know of one running through a ghost town in the next county north of us. Very cool we hit the same area, etc. BTW don't recall welcoming you to the forum before but Welcome to the CMD forum - great people here and lots of experience both in detecting and our spiritual lives too. Don't be a stranger.

Pete - Here's a site on the net that I have sent pics to before and he gives me info on the coins. Nice digs, good thing you got in there, steve in so az
