Unexpected Finds From A Spot That We Thought We Hunted Out

About two years ago we were given permission to hunt an old 1800's property and we really felt we had it hunted out. We've probably been there 15 times or so and we've found some wheats and only two silvers. My Mom found a 1964 rosie and a 1940 something quarter. She also found a 1900 Indian and I found a key date 1877 Indian.

Tonight I decided that I would go there and use my 6" HF coil and take it really slow. After about twenty minutes I found a memorial penny. About a half hour later I had a nice 38-40-42 signal. I dug down about 4 inches and ran my pointer in the hole and realized that whatever it was was out of the hole or a little deeper. I ran my pointer through the plug and broke the plug apart. As I went through the dirt i saw a little bump that registered with my pointer and when I broke it open and found a 1910 Barber dime in really nice condition. I was shocked!! I've always felt that there had to be older sliver there being that we found the indians.

About ten minutes later and about four feet from the hole where I dug the Barber I had a faint and kind of repeatable signal. I was hoping for another silver. I was down about 6" before it finally showed up with my pointer and I could see what it was. I could tell tell that it was the size of a penny and very smooth. I stuck it in my pocket and thought it was probably just a very deep wheat. When I got home I had to use a brass brush on it to clean it up and could start and see the One Cent marking of an Indian. I eventually got the front clean enough to tell with a magnifier that it was an 1874! That's my second oldest coin next to an 1834 half dime. She's not very pretty but I'm glad to have her. Guess I'll be back over there a few more nights this week with the 6" HF coil.

Your right that barber is in good shape. That just goes to show no place is ever hunted out. Congratulations.

That's a very nice lookin Barber dime, Congrat's and it's always nice to find one of the older IH's too

I've hunted this site with Mapper65 and we really did think that it was close to being hunted out, there are definately no easy targets at this point. The old place almost looks like a haunted house and I grew up with the kids who lived there, I used to play there when I was young. It's one of those places that you know it holds something good, but we sure struggled to find it. Persistance was the key, there may be more, but it won't be easy to find.

Nice finds and congraduations on your persistance.
I also have a site like you describe that my buddy and I have searched many times and found lots of coins,
but surprisingly, we started finding the older coins about the time we were about to give up on it.
This site has been searched with many different detectors, but I still believe it has some more nice finds in there.
Hadn't thought about taking a smaller coil in there, but after seeing this post, I may just have to give it a try.

cool finds, we hunted my dad`s old yard the other day and we had hunted it to death..five minutes in and my son had a nice silver dime....crazy but but it seems like some stuff just doesn`t want to be found until it`s ready..lol...congrats on the barber...nice coin:thumbup:

Nice lookin Barber!! I go to places I've been too many times also, and I still get lucky on occasion! Persistance pays off! Congrats!

Nice finds. Can't wait to get a 6" (Digger). I have 4 coils but no 6's.
Hard to completely hunt out a place. There's places I've gone to since '83 that still produce coins. Some are less than 5". These places are mostly close and easy access and known & MDed by lots of people. I still do them when I have time constraints.
Even my own house- last spring a 1907 IH right on top. Hard to believe.
Seems like a good spot for Shield 5. 3 cent or half dimes. Thanks for posting.

We went there again last night for about two hours. My Mom found a 1964 rosie with the 10.5" HF and I found two dimes and a penny with the 6" HF. My finds were not notable although two of them were from the 60's.

We're kind of just on a mission to see what else we can get even though we know it's not going to be easy. Luckily the guy that now owns the property doesn't mind how often he sees us there and he doesn't appear to have any interest in what we find other than being just curious as to what we find. I'm still shocked at pulling up the Barber and Indian and after another silver last night who knows what we might find.

Congratulations that's a nice Barber dime that you found. Perseverance pays off especially when you slow down and concentrate. I really like the 10" DD HF coil for coin shooting. Not very much gets past it! Again Congratulation's!
