About two years ago we were given permission to hunt an old 1800's property and we really felt we had it hunted out. We've probably been there 15 times or so and we've found some wheats and only two silvers. My Mom found a 1964 rosie and a 1940 something quarter. She also found a 1900 Indian and I found a key date 1877 Indian.
Tonight I decided that I would go there and use my 6" HF coil and take it really slow. After about twenty minutes I found a memorial penny. About a half hour later I had a nice 38-40-42 signal. I dug down about 4 inches and ran my pointer in the hole and realized that whatever it was was out of the hole or a little deeper. I ran my pointer through the plug and broke the plug apart. As I went through the dirt i saw a little bump that registered with my pointer and when I broke it open and found a 1910 Barber dime in really nice condition. I was shocked!! I've always felt that there had to be older sliver there being that we found the indians.
About ten minutes later and about four feet from the hole where I dug the Barber I had a faint and kind of repeatable signal. I was hoping for another silver. I was down about 6" before it finally showed up with my pointer and I could see what it was. I could tell tell that it was the size of a penny and very smooth. I stuck it in my pocket and thought it was probably just a very deep wheat. When I got home I had to use a brass brush on it to clean it up and could start and see the One Cent marking of an Indian. I eventually got the front clean enough to tell with a magnifier that it was an 1874! That's my second oldest coin next to an 1834 half dime. She's not very pretty but I'm glad to have her. Guess I'll be back over there a few more nights this week with the 6" HF coil.
