so in looking for more information on Laterite, I came across this link which explains in more laymen like terms the process of weathering and what gets left over for minerals at the surface. Some questions refer to diagrams that aren't in the document, but I found it educational nonetheless.

Now as to "weathering" .... that is the reason you would be painting the barn. And those minerals on the surface....... those are what's left of the lead based paint (when it spilled on the ground) if you don't get your laterite!
