Unusual Button Find / Anyone ever seen one like it?

While hunting an old house site yesterday I got a good signal at four inches down. As I turned the plug, I saw the button and expected it to be Civil War. It appears to be at least from the early 1900's or possibly even older. Has anyone ever seen one like it? I checked a few button sites, but could not find anything resembling it. The back is missing the button hook and the dirt is embedded into the button back and can not be removed without damaging the button. Any information would be appreciated.
