Unwanted Observers

One time while detecting a park on a very tight schedule, I did not want to be bothered by anyone (just wanted to concentrate).
A kid came up to me to see and ask what I was doing.
I told him I was searching for land mines and he soon left.
In retrospect, I may have lost an opportunity to promote the hobby to a youngster, but I couldn't resist the fun.
After all, we are supposed to have fun, right?

nothing wrong with that!

Its been my experience in general Kids are trouble, especially if they are your own! Kids are like potholes, annoying when they are small, and when they get big, they wreck your car!

You should promote the hobby, like those stupid TV shows, create more competion, get more places off limits.

Yeah---Sad to say, that's the way this great hobby is heading.

In todays world I try to avoid interacting with anyone elses kids. Even here at home with the little kids in our condo complex I try to go the other way. I can just hear it in my head - " That weird old guy with the metal detector, why is he talking to our kid". Nope. If I can't avoid them I'll go home imediately.
I love kids and have 3 grandkids down in Florida. My Gkids are teenagers now. I remember very well teaching them to allways stay away from stranders. Y'all know the drill.
Anyway theres nothing wrong or harm done if some of y'all have talked to kids. I'm just a paranoid person I guess. I can see where your head is down, head phones on and the kids are following. You sometimes just can't avoid them. I avoid anyone when I'm out tecting, period. But that's me.
Dog.......a weird old man with a metal detector.

I don't get why some you guys insist on PROMOTEing metal detecting.

Why would you want to PROMOTE the hobby? Its over crowded already with all those 'diggers' inspired newbies digging up the parks causing NO METAL DETECTING signs to pop up all over the country.
All we need now is for some detectorist to inspire some kid to pester his parents for a $50 wallyworld detector so he can also dig up the parks.

In this day and age i wouldn't carry on with any non-relative juvenile... period. A sad comment on today's societal, paranoidal and litigious culture.
My experience with kids hanging around while MDing is to get the hell out of there.

One of the reasons I use headphones and cover the speaker on my ppointer is to avoid attracing unwanted attention in parks etc. Headphones make it easy to appear that you can't or don't hear outside distractions besides enhancing the detector's tones.

I've had a couple of kids, and OLDER ADULTS come over to see if
I found "anything good." They are just curious. Probably saw that useless
TV show. A young 15 yr old kid came over a few days ago while I was
at a soccer field. His grandpa had an old detector. I suggested if he were
interested to come to Findmall and ask all the questions he wanted. ALso
recomended the EuroTec Pro as a begionner detector. Much eaiser to
to pin point than the Ace 250. Never understood why Garrett calls the 250
standard coil concentric WHEN IT'S NOT! It's eliptical in my opinion and if
your new to detecting it can be frustrating digging the target. If it was not
centered, it would appear way to the left or the right. My 350 DD is a piece
of cake to work with.

I prefer not to be bothered by anyone while I am engaged in detecting. But if I am going to hunt public places, I can't really do much about curious onlookers. As long as they are just looking. I am finding that many folks have accepted detectorists, already know what I am doing, and usually won't bother me. Although I inevitably get the question: "Find Anything good?", I usually just answer "Not enough to retire just yet." Then they just smile and go about their business... It goes with the territory, I guess. But I usually try to hunt as far away from people as I can get and usually earlier in the day.

Boys generally are naturally attracted to anything that is mechanical/electronic, especially if it's able to seek out 'treasure'! Treasure to some kids can be a small coin spill etc;.
I also don't like kids coming up to me while I'm detecting and I've found that if I can convince them that there is nothing to be found besides foil and junk, they quickly loose interest and leave.............usually after a minute.
If they don't, I usually quit detecting and walk away at a brisk pace and find another spot. The parents will soon get the message and call little Billy back and hopefully, that will be the end of looky loo Billy.
There are some real sassy, annoying brats out there as well which wont leave no matter what and those are the worst to get away from. I had one kid keep telling me where to detect next....grrrr! I never loose my cool but just walk away from them because you don't know who is watching you and ready to record your actions and what you say......you gotta to cover your backside in today's world. I never let them ruin my day though and refocus on the detecting.

Regarding that $%%^%#@@ tv show Diggers: If I am ever detecting and I see someone carrying on as those 2 clowns do, jumping up and down, doing cartwheels, yelling & screaming, etc... I will call the men in the white coats to come and take them away to the funny farm. They act like raving lunatics. Also, they dig such huge holes to extract such tiny targets (bullets, coins, etc.). I wonder if they are really amateurs/actors and not really professionals. Or maybe it's just scripted.

I forgot to mention tha silly language they use..... I'll bet there are many people who think that we all actually use these words like civ, sil, pock, nectar, etc....

Amen to that! It amazes me that some people in this day and age let their kids run up to a stranger in the park? I was hunting a Park a few years ago and this Family was having a picnic all the way on the other side. I get out my detector ground balance and make 2 swings and hear comes this little girl running from the picnic over to me all the way across the park? She couldn't of been more thann 6-7 years old and she's asking all kinds of questions and follows me around for about a half hour. Her parents are way on the otherside not saying a word or calling her back? If that was my child I would have screamed for her to get back before she made it to a strange person? They don't know me or who I am. I'm a good guy ,But they don't know that. After about a half hour I told her I heard her parents calling her and she ran back. I still was amazed how careless they were with their daughter?

You handled it ok . I'm in agreement here with the people that want to be left alone and are not for trying to enlist new detectorists . A person needs some time to be alone and enjoy their pastime .

Likely scripted with some planted targets. They usually find what they're looking for.

The show would not last if all they found were pull tabs and nails. Far as their :jump: raving lunatic anitcs::hot: and goofy detecting jargon:

It happened to me and I don't like kids around me! If I know I found good spot and I wouldn't digging until kids leave! Depends on kids! Nerd and interesting in history then that's different story but most kids are trouble makers around here in Chicago. Some kids that I can tell they laughing when I talk funny because I am deaf so I just ignore them and wouldn't digging until they left!

ChicagoJohn...I'm curious, how do you detect being deaf? Do you swing a modified visual rig? You could be of great help here to some of us that are losing our hearing...It would be easier to hunt blind than deaf I imagine....and a lot of us are approaching both situations...:please:
Mud

"How do you detect being deaf?"
Thats a good question for Garrett. I bet he or anyone
with electronics back ground could come up with
something...an attachment...that would vibrate and
let you know when you were "ON TARGET." You
could plug it into the head phone jack. No harm in
asking.
