Im back in the hobby after a year off. I did pretty well with my AT Pro in the past with over 50 rings my first yr with it. Now .....Im wondering if I can do better with my Excal upgrade? Any advise? The downfall of this year is the 15-20" of snow still on the ground ugh

Excellent! I too have the Pro, same wonderful experience you have had with it in the fresh, but have been looking real hard at that Excal II....same downfall this year with the snow...snowing again hard this am, with a foot on the ground in W Mich...lost 1/4 of the year so far.:sadwalk:..Big Lake still iced up bad, really need to get some gold soon.

For fresh water that Pro is going to be hard to beat as you know... Please stay in touch with your input on what you think about the Excal comparison..i am very curious as to if you think the upgrade is worth it for the fresh....major thing I've heard between the two is regarding gold chains?..I know the Pro wont miss them, and from what I've heard the Excal MIGHT? If the Excal can make up for that with more gold rings, then maybe everything will balance out? Still, if a fellow ever thinks he will get a chance to hunt the salt, then a fellow might need the Excal or the CZ21 I'm thinking...

The robins are out digging in our yard this morning. Most of the snow from Wednesday's blizzard is gone. It melted just about as fast as it fell. It has been a rough Spring so far. Better days are on the way!

I have been using an Excalibur for 20 years, the ATPro since they came out and I believe IF you are hunting currently used fresh water you would do equally as well with either detector on rings. Chains the ATPro will have the edge. Now if you move out of fresh water it is a whole different field of metal detecting likewise if you head into salt water. I personally would stay with the ATPro for land and the Excalibur for the salt water. Salt water beaches are as different as the land can be and there are other detectors I might choose such as a PI detector. No one detector that has been made is the Holy Grail in that it is the "BEST" for all locations.

No mater what detector you use, you have to learn how to use it and what the sounds are telling you. Of course you will have to walk until you hear a target, STOP, evaluate the sounds, make a conscious decision to retrieve the target and know when to give up and move on. All making your detecting time most productive and enjoyable.

May the ring of gold be in you ears and its glitter in your scoop!

Yes...I will update if winter ever go's away and I can actually get out there. I was hoping the excel would improve my depth,,,,,we shall see.

I purchased the Excal II for use at the beach. It hits like a hammer on Gold Rings but it does not do a very good job on small gold items. I have found one gold chain with it and most likely only because it had a real nice pendant on the chain. I have found one 14k gold charm that weighs one gram. I got just a teeny little chirp out of the Excal as I passed the coil over the target.

I find the Excal to be very stable on the beach and in the water. Sure is nice to not have to stop and re ground balance every few minutes to counteract the changes in mineralization.

I suspect that the Excalibur will give you greater depth at least on the Salt Water Beaches over the AT Pro. I have followed guys with the AT PRO as they detected down the beach and dug target after target that they left. All targets were deeper than the holes that they left in the sand.

Personally, I like the STRAIGHT SHAFTS made by PLUGGER!! They are SOLD by INDIAN NATIONS Detector Sales (a forum sponsor), and CHUCK has GREAT Pictures of the
Shafts!! Also, get one with the SHAFTLOCKS, Not the CAMLOCKS!! BEST of LUCK, Les Robinson.

Strongly concur with Les. Swinging the Excal with a straight shaft is like using a different detector compared to that snake that Minelab mounts the Excal on. I bought Pluggers "Balanced straight shaft". What a difference. I am an old rascal and I can swing the excal for hours after I would have been worn out using the standard shaft. One thing I do not like at all is the headphones on the Excal. I put gel pads on mine to make them a little more comfortable. But the tones are not as distinct with them as they are with a sovereign with good phones and I find their lack of noise attenuation to sometime make it difficult to hear those weaker tones of deep targets. I set my excal to minimimum discrimination, volume full, sensitivity to where it quits falsing and I dig everything that I hear. Yes I dig a good bit of trash but some times that "piece of trash" tone is a gold ring.

Unfortunatley Chuck no longer sells these as Plugger quit making them for the At Pro due to some difficulties on the control head mount may have to go to the Anderson shaft for a straight rod setup I just bought the last one Chuck had in the store for my AT Pro
