US Dimes - why do they sound different?

I've noticed that with my PI and also VLF machines that US dimes sometimes sound like a nail (double-tap sound) in all-metal mode (or with the PI). Anyone have a guess as to why this would be?

Hi Jeff,
Maybe some of the dimes are on edge in the beach. This would cause them to give a double signal. The only other case when I have found coins, that are flat to the coil, to give a double signal is when they have a steel core. Such is the case with our recent 1p and 2p coins which are copper plated steel.
Eric.
