:usaflag: Desc./Pin-point Setting

So that I could repair the leak in my Excal housing, I removed the circuitboard from the housing.

Everything seems to be working fine now except that I'm not sure if I have the Desc./Pinpoint knob oriented correctly.

Looking down the machine one sees this knob first.

If I turn the knob to pinpoint I hear and feel a distinct click of a switch being activated near the end of the knob travel.

Should that click be on the right or on the left?

Pinpointing does seem to work when the switch is clicked "on" and the knob is in the correct position, but I have a nagging feeling that somehow I have the switch oriented wrong!

Help???

CJ

There is a little brass post on the board that prevents the knob from turning too far. Be sure the pin on the knob shaft hits the post so the knob won't turn further than it is supposed to.

If you are experiencing leakage around the knob shafts I believe that Minelab can put new seals in for about $75. I'm considering having this done to mine just because it's getting so old. Parts for the old Excals are very limited so if a board gets fried then it all over.

Hi again John,

Your info is always appreciated!

The Excal is just fine with no leaks!

The only bit of a question I have with my messing about with it is whether I have everything assembled right.

Does the switch "click" as it goes into the pinpoint position?

Thanks again,

CJ

CJ ... I am not 100% sure about this but I think in pinpoint mode the tone ID is not active.
In other words if you can hear a tone pitch between a nickel and a quarter you are NOT in pinpoint mode.

Some people choose to hunt in pinpoint (all metal) mode with that detector.
It might be something you want to try on beaches that are not very trashy.
They say it gives them extra depth ... I would not know as I never used one this way.

Thanks Willee,

Trying to learn all I can about this machine.

I'm 68 years old and don't want to be wasting my time, doncha know!!

Thanks GH,

Does the "clicking" occur on the Pinpoint side of the knob's travel?

Or does it occur on the Descriminate side of the knob's travel?

I understand that it is between the two positions where the knob stops, but I was asking if it (the clicking) favors one side or the other?

When I re-installed the circuit board in the housing I may have gotten the switch shaft turned wrong and I'm trying to determine if that is the case.

Thus the confusion!

Mine is clicking near the end of the knobs travel in one direction and it could mean desc or pin point!

I don't know which.

If I knew the machine better it would probably be obvious which is being activated by the click, but so far I havent worked it out!

Regards,

CJ

CJ, I just walked over to my 800, to check. The "click" occurs in the middle, right between the modes, savvy? I know you REALLY like to perform your own work, because you CAN do it yourself. I admire that, but I feel like it would be advantageous to just send the unit into Minelab, at least one time, just to make sure all is well. Chances are it would only cost around $75 and then you would know everything was good. You owe it to yourself to see what the Excal will do, when it is operating at it's full performance. When I send a unit into them (one of mine is on the way back now), I enclose a detailed letter explaining all I want addressed. I am always VERY impressed, when I get a unit back from them. Their work is exceptional.

Also, I read in another post of your's, that you had no response to your e-mail inquirey about the circuit board (EX200), I believe? I would encourge you to go ahead and call them, someone should know the information there. Not sure why(perhaps they aren't staffed for it), but e-mails are not answered at Minelab, from what I've heard, so I never attempt to correspond with them, in that manner. When I want to speak to Minelab, I dial 702-891-8617, during their hours of operation and someone always answers. Give them a call and let us know what they say about it.

Thanks for the info GH!

I just tried their number and got a buisy signal. Will try again!

This machine is an older model, of that I am certain and information is a bit sketchy.

I did find some nice explanations in Clive's 2nd book on the Excal!

Your interest and offering helpful advice are greatly appreciated!
