:usaflag: Since I started using the Excaliber with a straight shaft it is a joy to use!! :detecting:

Each morning after I have had my coffee and before I head out to my days work I spend an hour or so searching the local heavily hunted beach,

There are hunters out there every evening after the days crowd to canvas the beach from end to end and I, being a morning person, am taking "left overs"!!

Since I mounted my Excal control housng on a straight shaft it is so comfortable to use that I hate to leave the beach for work!!

Each morning I recover enough new drop coins to pay for my days coffee and experience great satisfaction in digging those coins that the other "regulars" miss!!

I look forward to each morning and find I no longer have a problem arising at 5 AM to meet another day.

Fresh air, exercise, a handfull of recovered coins and the pleasure of being actively alive are what this hobby means to me!!!

Hey CJ,
That's the key to living mate is getting outside and enjoying what we have got as we only have one shot at it.
I was just saying to my wife that if we ever won the lottery and became multi-millionaires, I still would be out the
scouring the beaches and waterways for the next unknown object buried beneath the sands. It's a sickness that only
we crazy people understand.
I thought about retiring my old Excal to be configured to a permanent straight shaft for beach hunting only.
Even thought about using the lower end of the current original shaft and getting some alloy tubing for the rest of the shaft.
I got a mate that welds aluminium, so a handle should'nt be a problem, just gotta get that angle correct to be comfortable.
My old Excal is a bit long in the tooth and I'm starting to worry about the integrity of the seals, I have look after it pretty well.
I will take a closer look at your previous post to give me some ideas.
Cheers and HH

Thanks for the replys Friends.

How can such enjoyment be a "sickness"?

GL&HH Fellow Hunters,

CJ

You could use a bike handle bar extention(horn) for the handle that way they are adjustable for length and some for angle too, most aftermarket shafts seem to have them nowadays. Once welded its fixed, if you leave holes for the armcuff adjustment too you can set them for a perfect balance, i like mine a bit more front heavier for in the water as to wet/dray sand

Thanks for the information kered,

I discovered that I had very little option as to how I assembled my shaft, because of the short coil cable on the older machine I have.

The handle bar grip I used is right off an old bike I was scrapping and worked perfectly as you said.

I have been searching the sand on our local beaches and have found the machine to be easy to handle and a joy to use.

My swinging hand is a bit arthritic and I have had some discomfort with the old shaft that came with it from the manufacturer.

Changing the ballance and grip angle made a huge difference!
