I'm new here but if you use gloves when hunting

I'm a woodworker and use them at work and tried them for this hobby and they work great.

Its a good idea to use gloves anyway. Some places have lots of broken bits of glass in the ground.
You also should consider that there is a bacteria/virus called Merca. Its been around for years but recently
has gained some notority for becoming drug resistant. It can be contacted anywhere, in hospital, atheltic rooms, or playing in the dirt.
Always be careful when digging around in the dirt with your bare hands.
Best to carry a bottle of rubbing alcohol in your back pack or car in case you DO scrape
or cut yourself. It stings but wash the wound in the alcohol immediately.

I agree that gloves help against cuts and scrapes, but catching MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staph. aureus) from the dirt is not a concern. MRSA is a drug resistant strain of Staph aureus bacteria that's been alive and well in hospitals since the 1960s. Recently, there have been more non-hospital related cases, but none them have been detectorists! These MRSA infections are spread from direct contact of open cuts and sores with contaminated surfaces. Washing your hands with soap and water and covering cuts is the best way to protect yourself and prevent the spread of the bacteria. I'd be more worried about getting tetanus from a rusty nail, or some other infection from bird or farm animal poop in a field.

I keep gloves handy in my possibles bag. I dont always use them, but when needed, nothing will suffice in their place.

Don't forget the alcohol or some disinfectant you can rub on your
hands in case of abrasions or cuts.

I used to hunt without gloves, that is until I came across some poison ivy!!!! It was before the leaves grew in, the next day I had a bad case of the itches!!! I just got rid of it last week...
