Might get a chance to pickup a used Garrett ATX and was curious what I should look for other than the obvious wear and tear. Are there any serial number ranges that had problems or floppy coil problems. I know what to look for in a used car but not in this detector. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Used ATX question

If the coil flops, there is a screw to increase the friction to prevent the flopping. The best way to look for flaws is to try it out. Also, check integrity of the coil wire where it goes into the box. There should be no "bad" runs as to serial numbers.

Before buying a USED ATX detector:
I would disconnect the shaft from the control box and look carefully at the coiled wire. There have been a couple of instances where the cable has been caught by the shaft's edge while it was being collapsed actually "cuting" the black cable covering.
Next verify the working of the three CAMS on the shaft and for excessive wear on the short area between the shaft's flat surfaces. The lower section of my shaft split thus the CAM would not hold a set length. Garrett replaced it under warranty. Keep the CAMS clean - see Garrett's videos on-line.
A good visual check of the control box and coil for big dings. Then the inside the battery compartment and screw on connectors for signs of leakage or pin damage - I doubt you will see any, but just something to look for. Just out of the sake for safety, I would replace four O-rings, one on each of the battery caps one on each of the screw on connector (coil cable and headphone). I replace mine every 1000 hours of use or sooner if I seen something like a nick or impression from a piece of sand has made.
When reassembling the coil or headphone connectors: make sure the pins are aligned correctly then be VERY careful you do NOT pinch the O-rings. Ensure the O-ring is seated evenly around the entire connector. Then start and tighten the knurled "nut". The connector may be a bit tricky to push back together BEFORE you secure them in place.

The ATX sold before I was able to inspect it, let work get into the way. I'm wondering with the new ATX coils coming out if I should wait and see what the new packages Garrett might be offering. I'm currently using the Atp but want an ATX for nugget shooting and the beach when visiting my daughter.
