Used Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505

As title states, would a used bounty hunter 505 with standard coil be a good deal for $130 + shipping (which is another $30 or so)?


It's been lightly used, some scratches underneath the coil, but nothing major.


This will be my first detector and I wasn't sure if I should invest in something else

I've searched around and looked at the f2, ace 250, delta 4000, for comparison and the pioneer 505 seems to have the 'best' features (from kellyco) compared to the others. There have been a lot of positive and negative reviews on all 4, but the pioneer can be had for the most economical price

I was thinking there was a Post not too long ago here about getting a new 505 but in a damaged box for around $200, so you may want to read some to see if you can find it and see if these units are still on sale. If I recall correctly, the very same person had bought one and the box was only very lightly damaged.

My 505 with a standard coil I got used over a year ago off of E-Bay for I believe for around $150 with some shipping and later again on E-Bay I bought the 4" coil for about $24 with free shipping.

Bargy: yes it is a good deal! go for it! I promise you will not regret it the 505 is an awesome and highly under rated machine. I bought a used 505 in oct. from e-bay for about the same price and it has been outstanding in all kinds of different conditions. I have great success on calif. beaches, tot lots, parks, old fairgrounds, anywhere I have taken it, it has never failed to bring home the goodies. Went out last Sunday in 10 degree weather, swinging over 4 to5 inches of snow cover in a school playground and brought home 47 coins ( 16 of them quarters) 1 junk ring, 4 silver chains, 1 silver earring, and 1 silver religious medallion. Take the time for the learning curve, be patient till you learn your machine, the notch modes are great after you get the hang of it. ED in co.

i too am on the west coast, so our conditions should be similar

what coils are you using if you dont' mind me asking?

I plan to just go to the parks (local), for now until I build up some confidence to face the public lol

I got mine off of Craig's list for $100.00 and it is a great machine especially for a newcomer. I think it does a better job of id than my more expensive machines. It is light weight and I drove over a hundred miles to get it.

If you don't get a manual with it, down load one from the net which is what I did.

I think that is a good price, I was just lucky that the guy I bought if from did not understand how to use it.

This hobby has a learning curve and the more you use it the more you will find and like the machine.

I say go for it.

I have both the standard 8 inch coil and the 4 inch nugget shooter. The 4 inch is great for getting close to the legs on the playground equipment and under bleachers, but watch out for the tendency to swing it to fast after using the bigger coil. Ed in colo.

I am thinking of selling my 505 since I have found it difficult to understand. Too much of a learning curve for me. I'm in So. Cal. I don't know how much to ask for it.. I was thinking $150 since it is in new condition, used 5 times. I have both coils for it.

I drove to Tacoma today and got the 505 for $75. I am amazed at how large the case is, the portion that houses the electronics/display etc. It is at least twice the volume as the Elite 2200.

It is a heavier machine and more complicated to operate. It appears that its advantages will be 1) deeper scanning, 2) no-motion detecting and 3) selective iron discrimination.

Hey, for $75 now my non-MD friends will have a unit to use when we go out exploring

For now, I will have to get used to the machine... only three tones vs 4 with the Elite 2200 and the manual ground balancing etc.

I can try to shorten your 505 learning curve... I bought mine in Nov & I am tearing up with it.. Found over $95 clad in just the last few weeks...plus a 1907 dime & 1919 Half Peso (80% silver).
I used Auto-Notch at 1st & still do with a LOT of pulltabs around but found Disc Mode with knob 'just' tweaking past 12 oclock tunes out most iron & trash while leaving nickels & gold in the LOW tone, Zinc pennies in middle tone, Sweet HIGH tone for all Silver & clad... You WILL dig aluminum trash to find nickels...
I find my depth reads deeper than actual... 2" is on the surface, 4" is within 2" of surface. I have found clad coins to about 8" depth. Size is not terribly accurate.. I get quarter readings & dig dimes. I do find that if it indicates dime/penny & stays there, it's a penny. If it indicates both quarter & dime, but mostly dime it's likely a dime..
To quick PinPoint go to No Motion All Metal & reset ground balance as you get centered on target. As you reduce the sound/sensitivity you will reduce target area.
I don't use notch much at all, but who knows? It should help w/ relic searching when I get there...
I did hear the 505 sucks on salt water beaches though... DOC
