Will a PDA affect the electronics on the Goldquest or other PI's? I am thinking about writing a program using the audio output from the Goldquest.
I could then display in real-time information received from the Goldquest on the LCD to help with my bad hearing plus many other interesting Features.
 
Probably not but why don't you just test it first and see. What I'm interested in is how you are going to interface the PDA with the analog electronics?

Audio spectrum analysis programs for pocket Pcs already exist. The ones I am about to menition are for the Pocket PC devices (HP) not Palm devices.

Most pocket PCs have built in microphones, however, you need to have one in which the headphone jack doubles as a microphone plug. Best to ask the manufacturer about this as this is not listed on specs. I have been told the Siemens sx56 has this ability as well as most of HP models-e.g. h 2215. However, I hate to buy one and find out it does not work.
In addition, make sure your screen can be seen in outside light.

so your saying a cable from the goldquest headphone plug to the in mic plug on the handheld so when you get a signal you can jest look at the pda analizer and get and idea of what it is by veiwing the pad wow what a concept very interesting i jest looked up that spectrum analyzer and it gives a color diagram cool so im wondering if the nails and bottle caps will have the identical wave lengths still wow what a concept keep posted on your test would like to hear more bout this hh larry ca

Maybe there are better ways of getting a useful signal to display on a PDA, than to use the audio output. I couldn't find the spectrum analyser program, so could someone tell me what the bandwidth is. If there is one that can display frequency components up to 100kHz, that would be very interesting. It would be more useful to display the components of the complete signal decay, by having a sample gate that stays open from, say 10uS, right up to the next transmitter pulse.

program can be found at www.phonature.com Just click on Handee Spectrum Analyzer. This one can be used with Palm. It has three frequency scales which can be selected. 15 Hz-250 Hz 15Hz-4kHz and 15Hz-22Hz.
The handheld Audio Spectrum Analyzer(HASA) is at www. bofinit.com. Check off both boxes for more detail.
(Actually I am more interested in the audio range to 22Hz)

As the Goldquest auduo is derived from a VCO, I doubt if you'd see much more than amplitude and harmonic info.
If you want to see something interesting, take the output of the switching fets and perform an FFT on it. If you use an amplifier with a logarithmic frequency response up to 250KHz with a cut off after that, then perform an FFT. INTERESTING RESULTS. I'm not saying any more. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
Dont think a PDA could handle the sample rates involved though. <img src="/metal/html/frown.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":(">
