Using the Outlaw With the 5" Coil Question

Tee1up

Hey folks,

I am admittedly new to MD (2 months) but as I have 3 coils in my arsenal, I have done a fair bit of testing with each in my garden patch and while I can see distinct advantages for the 8" and the 10" DD, I am not sure why i would ever want to use the small 5". One part of my test area has a lot of junk and I can not see any difference between the 8 and the 5 in those areas. The 8" is extremely sensitive and seems to recover as quickly...maybe better. I've read smaller coils are better in junky patches but I can't see it. I am admittedly new so maybe this is an experience thing.

Can some of you veterans comment on whether or not a coil that small ever gets some swing-time and if so, under what conditions?

As a side note, I am finding the 10" is the coil I use 80% of the time...it is almost certainly a 'luck' thing but when the DD is in the air I dig coins more often. Lady luck seems to prefer a bigger unit.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe you haven't swung it in a junky enough patch yet. When you are in an area that the signals sound like a machine gun, the small coils really show their worth. Also, with the sensitivity turned down, you should be able to get considerably closer to playground equipment, fences etc.

Thanks Bill, I'll try your sensitivity tip.

I have the outlaw also. I haven't used the 10x12 much except at the beach. I usually use the 8" coil or my clean sweep. I have a Compadre and it taught me the value of the small coil. When all you have is the small coil you learn to love it. I dont use the 5.75 on the Outlaw much because I usually have my Compadre with me and just switch to it rather than switching coils. I use the Compadre or 5.75 coil when I hunt around picnic tables, close to large metal items, and on river or lake shores around rocks where there isn't much space. I find that pinpointing is easier with the 5.75 but I dont use the pinpoint function much. I am going to try the 9x8 coil from my Conquistador on the Outlaw next to see how it performs.

Machineman, I'm betting you won't see much difference, if any. I've done that swap with several different detectors and what difference there was didn't amount to much at all. However, if anything, the 8" gave a tad more depth. Let us know how in works on the Outlaw.
