V3/V3i Modification - Use Any Set Of Headphones With The Wireless Functions

Disclaimer: If your not sure of exactly what your doing. Do not attempt this mod. I am not responsible for anything that results from this post. Dismantling your $200 White's wireless headphones will void your warranty, and potentially make White's mad at you if you blow them up, and try to send them back. You could destroy your detector, and headphones by doing this. Playing around with electricity can hurt, or kill you, your dog, your cat, and any low flying birds in the vicinity. Inadvertently crossing the wires could result in all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light, resulting in a wormhole that will surely effect the space time continuum. That being said...

Do this at your own risk!

Essentially what this does is to create a belt mounted module out of the earphone cup of the Whites wireless headphones that you can plug any set of headphones into for use with the V3/V3i, making use of the built in wireless functions of the unit, much like that of the MinelabCTX-3030. This took a little longer to figure out because I wanted to do this non-destructively, so the procedure could be reversed, and restore the headphones to factory original condition.
As I have stated this is a non-destructive mod, so it can be completely reversed with no damage to the original headphones. As you can see the actual Whites wireless module is quite small. The Harness consist of a stereo female headphone pigtail that I cut from a inexpensive Radio Shack splitter. $8.00. The battery holder came from Radio Shack as well. $4.00 The connector plug is made from two old 3-Pin PC fan connectors.

The module mounts on a support plate with screws...

Then it is flipped over and mounted back into the Ear cup minus the speaker, and padding. The backside will be covered with a custom made back plate to seal out the weather, and hold the battery pack in place. The belt loop will be mounted to this same back plate. A flat piece of plastic cut to shape with some fine weather stripping should do the job. It will be held in place with the three screws that you see already screwed into their sockets. You end up with a real clean look when done...

Using the ear cup allows for the continued use of the original power/connect button, and it is only about an inch and a half wide. Pretty compact...

The carabiner is mounted with a screw-in type cable holder to the back plate.

The module seen here being used with the SunRay Gold Headphones.

It works great, with the exception of a slightly lower volume range. I just turned up the volume on the V3/V3i side to compensate.

There you have it. Now you can use whatever headphones you like with the built-in Whites V3/V3i wireless controls. Nothing to add to the detector side, just the receiver to clip to your belt, and plug your headphones in to.

What, nobody else thinks this is a cool mod? I would think some of you Whites guys would be jumping all over this neat little hack.

Always like to see stuff get modded, so just want to say great job there.

Great mod! I have the wireless headphones and have never used them because I think they're just too big and hot. I use the Sun Ray Golds when nugget hunting with the GMT & TD,I but for coin and jewelry hunting I always use light weight phones. At least this way I won't be connected to the detector.

Great Mod! Allowing people wireless freedom while using any headphone is outstanding.
