Vacation in North/South Carolina and Florida

We had planned to leave California Sept. 24th, go to the emerald mine in North Carolina for a few days, then to the coast, going down to South Carolina then around around Florida then back up to Greensboro, North Carolina. However...we now know that it is definitely hurricane season there. We're watching Ike, which seems to be going west to Texas. My questions are...are we completely insane to be even thinking of going there now and what is the weather like, barring hurricanes, this time of year. Does it rain every day?, etc. We really want to try our luck with our Minelabs and are disappointed that the weather might cancel the trip.

Thanks for any advice and help with our planning (or cancellations).

We live half way between Greensboro and Emerald Isle. It only rained here for about a day and a half when Hannah came through. It is very unusual for us to get 2 bad storms in the same season. You can go to www.wral.com and click on the weather link to get a five day forecast. This should help you out - they cover all major storms in NC. I understand how you can be excited about using your Minelab. I purchased an Excalibur 800 about a month and a half ago & have already found 9 rings - 3 gold, 1 silver. Have a safe trip! HH!

I live a bit north in Virginia, and we dont really have a wet or dry season. Sometimes it rains, but usually it does not. Florida gets rain almost every day, but, not for long at a time. We rarely get a big storm here. Just watch the tropics, it usually takes a week for a storm to get across and come close, which should be plenty of time to know whats going on before you come. Here is a link to another weather page, but this is for the tropics. Hope this helps,
Anthony

Don't worry about it a bit...GO, hunt, enjoy.

There is plenty of advance warning for the hurricanes and so far they seem to be missing the areas you speak of. Don't bother trying to come to Virginia Beach though. Not that we wouldn't be glad to have you, but the hunting here has pretty much sucked lately. The beaches are heavily stacked up with sand and the targets are buried way out of range. We have not gotten the kind of movement we need here to open the treasure chest. We're pretty much hoping to get some storm action. Although you can keep the kind they got in Texas! :nono:

The easy way to stay safe in Fl. is watch the reports day by day. When they figure out where the storm is going to come ashore just move to another part of Fl. for a few days. If storm is coming up the gulf coast go to the Atlantic coast to hunt and vice verse. If it is coming straight across the state you can either go north or south of the land fall area, you may get wet from the rain but you will be safe. Fl. is over 400 miles long from tip to tip plenty of room to run and still hunt. So come on down and enjoy. HH

Thanks to all of you who replied to our post. We are going to go now and hope for the best. We need plane tickets and since we live in a small town, we have a small commuter airport. We fly to Los Angeles or San Francisco to get on the big airplanes. The flight times get filled up fast. We're looking forward to new beaches. We live on the central coast of California and they're aren't as many people on our beaches. We did go to southern California last year (San Diego and Huntington Beach) and didn't find anything but coins...very disappointing.

Thanks again!
