Vaquero GB Knob Question

JerseyHunter

New member
Just got my new used Tesoro Vaquero and I have a question about ground balancing. I've read the manual and watched youtube videos on how to GB. My question is this: Is the GB knob supposed to rotate more than 360%? My knob just keeps spinning around in either direction, is this normal? Thanks for your anticipated answers.

The knob will rotate endlessly in either direction, but you will feel some resistance when it is at the end of its range.
It is a 3 3/4 turn pot.. no harm in turning it more than that, but it has no effect on the setting once it is past the range.

Does that mean that it will turn 3 and 3/4 times around, then no longer functions? Sorry new to this type of Ground balancing.

Yes it has a range of 3 3/4 turns.. after that turning if further does not do anything.
You will feel a slight resistance when it reaches the end of its range, but it will continue to turn.
You are not likely to have to go to one extreme or the other to get a good ground balance adjustment.
It is very easy to balance and only takes seconds once you have an understanding of what to listen for.
Just remember to make sure the ground is free of metal when doing the balancing procedure or it will drive you crazy trying to figure out what the heck is going on.

Got it. Thanks for the explanation. I've used whites for years but never had to ground balance like this before, even my fisher is easier. I guess like anything new it takes time to get accustomed to. Glad I had your experience to help me. Thanks again. Marty

To set my ground balance I use the same procedure all the time so when I start to balance the pointer of the knob is always in the same position. I turn GB knob clock wise 5 times and stop with pointer at 12 o'clock and then I turn knob counter clock wise 2 turns stopping again at 12 o'clock a now detector is ready to ground balance using the pumping method in All Metal in an area where there is no metal in the ground.
I found this method on the forum and it worked for me when I began detecting with Vaquero, so I hope it helps set your balance in a consistant fashion.

Yes, it has a drag feacher when it goes to each stop (extreme) Thanks for your anticipated answers.

A one turn pot is rather coarse & tuchie (+ has no slip).

A 3 3/4 turn pot allows finer tuning & is less tuchie (that is why Tesoro uses it for GB)..............some people have installed 10 turn pots for even more control (sort of overkill).

Having a slip feacher helps protect the pot from damage when they reach the end of there sweep each way.....M m had the right way to start out by centering the pot.

Sounds like to me that the knob might be loose on the shaft. Isn't it attached by a set screw? JerseyHenter, see if it is held on by a small screw, and if it is, try to tighten it up some.

Good Idea on checking those set screws not only on Tesoros but all detectors. Last night I was setting my Vaquero knob to break up the signal at the nickle mark. After that was done i decided to check my other set scres. Sure enough my threshold set screw was loose. Learned a trick from my Archery days where I would put a dab of bow string wax on all of my allen screws to keep them from loosining up due to the vibration a bow produces. Always worked like a charm.

fwcrawford is correct on how the GB control works, feels kind of funny but it is what is and it works.

Thanks everyone. Tried turning it a couple of times clockwise and then I could hear that it was balancing it out. I guess I should have tried what Mm said first. Anyway it works great. Had a great short hunt with it today and really like it.
