vdi and depth

I was wondering if anyone could tell me why sometimes when im detecting I will get a reading of mayby a dollar and it will say 1-3 inches with a real strong signal sometimes it says no depth and there is nothing there. just curious

The VDI meter is for coin size targets and also coin size depth, so a bigger item will show different. In most case you will be able to tell these by the size of them and by raising the coil 3 or 4 inches and notice it makes no difference on the depth reading or the strenght of the signal.
Some things that will do this is alum cans, bigger iron or other trash items. When you notice one that seems to be loud and biger than normal just raise the coil higher and see if it make a differnce, if not chances are it is a bigger item. You can do this in pinpoint or disc.

Rick,
Rick ND is right on with his post.
You will also get readings, like I did today, that read a solid dime, VDI +80, and it may say 2 or 3 inches deep. After digging 5 inches and no dime the hole now may read a quarter, VDI +85 and now say 6-7 inches.
The one's that I have dug in the past were always trash as aluminum cans, or other similar items. Now I just bury the item and go on. When to dig and when to bury will be your choice. I am a coinshooter so usually hunt area's that have a high traffic of people. Then when digging in that soccer field the choice to bury, to me anyway, is an easier one to make.
Now if I was a relic hunter and was out at an old home site or on the south 40 by that old barn I would probably choose to investigate more of these signals. In this case it could be a buried mason jar full of silver coins...

The two things I've found that do this to me are really big things buried deeper but most of the time it is caused by readings off of the edge of a piece of iron such as a nail. Its kind of disappointing because alot of times it seems like such a good hit too. Just got to keep digging though
