Very slow year for me!!!

All I can say is WOW, when I look at the the quantity and quality of the finds that hunters such as James N.D. has produced! Excellent stuff!

My efforts have been pretty futile this year. After I got my SE early this year, I and my hunting partner, who has an XS and an SE, have been hitting all the sites that have coughed up good finds in years past, hoping to capitalize on the deep ones left behind. I've been metal detecting for over 30 years and have found some very nice coins, but all the old sites have pretty much been barren, or produced so little that it doesn't seem worth the effort. Maybe we did too good a job, years ago, with our old detectors and large coils....

I've gridded out the areas, worked slow, hunted in all metal and used larger coils on the SE, but I've only got about 6 silver dimes, two silver Washington quarters and one Barber quarter. Very few wheats, even, and only one IH cent. My partner's found even less. In fact, he's so discouraged he's put his SE on Ebay to sell, and is thinking about giving up the hobby.

I will never do that, but a change in strategy may be necessary. Trying to find un-hunted old sites in this area is pretty tough when you have had an active TH'ing club around since 1980, with lots of good hunters in it! Can't afford to drive a hundred miles one way every weekend either...

So, keep posting those good finds...at least it gives me hope that its still out there and somewhere, I might discover a good site that will start bringing in some old silver again!

A lot of sites are drying out of finds , it has to happen has time moves on and more people keep buying and using detectors. Many old parks i used to detect on and were good coin shooting sites in the eighty's now have mostly foil and chewed up tin cans under the surface. 75% of coin shooting sites are close to been worked out.

Knipper,
Don't know what part of the country you live in, but i would highly recommend more research to find those old sites and like mentioned earlier, water hunting. I'm relatively sure not many in any area have tried water hunting. I have found some excellent finds in the water at old covered bridges and swimming holes etc.. I don't live near any old lakes, but they are a great spot as well. I'm sure you already know that research is key and there is no feeling like finding or getting permission to search a virgin site. Fortunately for me i have found several in my area and i see more and more detectorists in my area with each passing year. I hope you do find those key spots to hunt and maybe consider using the Excal to start water hunting. Whatever you do, don't sell!!!

Knipper, I live in a small town and have experienced the same thing here. I have had the best results going smaller on the coil and going to trashy areas with a lot of masking going on. Try different settings on your Explorer and go slow. This has produced some pleasant surprizes for me. HH and good luck!

Have you asked permission for Private Yards? This is the last resort type of detecting and I find there is very few that actually will go up to some Old Home and ask for permission. All the Home Owner will do is give you a Yes or No, which if No, you still didn't gain anything but in knowing that this person was to Sell their Home, that the next Owner may just let you detect the property. If Yes, you might be walking right into a Virgin Yard loaded with that Old Silver you dream of finding once again. As for having a Club since 1980. It doesn't matter if the research had been done way back when and the sites worked to death. The New Technologies of the Explorer Detectors will go a lot deeper than the Old White's or what have you, and should find them Deep Keepers that were missed long ago. So don't give up hope Knipper. Do the Research and maybe you will find a Site that everyone forgot about or passed up and then you could be finding them Silver you and your partner are looking for. There is always some site that was missed and always keep an eye out for Construction. If you need some tips for Sites to look for, let me know and I will try and help out the best I can. Good Luck and HH. :detecting:
