I am new to relic hunting, is anyone from Virginia in here? I am a re-enactor and a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. I would like to find a Virginia button. Where is a good place to look or do you ever really know where to look?
I know people up in Northern VA and SE VA, but nobody out that way.... anyhow, you can find VA buttons near where you are for sure.. maybe someone from your area thats on the forum here would be willing to point you in the right direction, but best bet is doing some research and trying to locate anywhere troops may have been in your area.. old homes, along old roads, near old waterways, etc. I found my first VA button about 100 yards outside of a 1780's era home in a cornfield. It caught me by surprise because I was looking for coins I would suggest learning your machine as well as possible in your yard or a city park and then expanding out into CW hotspots.. good luck, feel free to send private message if you have more questions
btw, if you're in the SCV, you might ask some other members a lot of them relic hunt
one other thing, you don't necessarily have to be on a CW spot to find VA buttons... The militia starting wearing VA seal buttons around 1815 and continued use into the CW, and even afterwards until the early 1900's.
I grew up right on top of Camp Jackson which was my neighborhood. Camp Jackson is where all the county men enlisted, drilled and camped before being assigned to a unit. My ancestors were mostly in the "Stonewall" Brigade. I have been talking with a man who is gonna come help me. Where I live now is directly on the route that Col. Toland came when he raided the town. Also not far out of town was another battle which was Cove Mountain that is all private land now. I would love to find a VA button. I would even buy one if I can find a good one. I want to display it with my 3rd great grandfathers gun he fought with in the 36th Va Infantry.
Hi MGillmanCSA, I live in Verona which isn't too far. There should be Va buttons out there waiting to be dug. I would suggest doing some research and get out there diggin based on your information. Those two things will help increase your odds of finding one...or more even. Like umrgolf said, find your OLD houses or house sites, old roads and where those roads crossed water or came to a spring. If there were troops in the area chance are they were in those areas, in which case they lost something.
I agree on hunting homesites... we found 2 Virginia buttons and a confederate lined "I" along with a New York button in King William Co. Va. Good luck!
I just want a Virginia button to put up with my rifle and pictures of my ancestors. I don't know really when I will have time to hunt for stuff, I have so much going on. I have Va buttons on my reenactment uniform but not the real thing haha anyway thanks for the help I will try to get something located even if I have to buy the button. The button is all I really want. Wouldn't mind helping to people to find other things. A .36 caliber bullet would be great to put up with my gun as well. It was used during the war thankfully it made it home it is my most prized possession.

I'm in Lynchburg. Mike, we will get you a Va. button real soon. Might even get you a plate if things go right. And if you want a .36 just let me know. I've got a few of them. I dug them at properties adjacent to the Appomattox Courthouse battle. Just give me a holler. You know my E-mail.
Hello to all. Just found this site 2/2/13. And have really enjoyed what Ive been reading. Is there away to contact folks on here thru e-mail?
Had a question for HanoverDigger. Any how Ill just ask here for now lol. I live right at nelson bridge on the king william side. Just moved here bout 3 months ago. was living by west store. Had plenty of finds there from using old maps. But since moving here nothing is marked in my
HUGE map book on this location. Only things I can come with is info on Hanover town. Seems like my maps are only showing all skirmishes/engagments/camps ect.WEST of the Pamunkey River. Ive seen quite a few people relic hunting on the east side. I was curious if maybe You could point me in the right direction. Thanks for any help....GOOD DIGGING TO ALL !!!!---: you may contact me at hillbilly804@gmail.com
