Vista Gold Depth

Sven

Well-known member
I was answering a PM request on another forum regarding depth of older and newer Vista Golds.
I have an older one with the new updated larger serach coil.
So I did couple testings.

Did air test with the following settings
Coil new improved 7x11, no falsing
Sens 45
Slow Recovery
2 tone
Boost on
Disc 0-65% of scale

Air Test Depths - Repeatable signal to barely a signal
Indian Head penny 10-11"
Silver dime 8-9"
Silver quarter 10
US Clad quarter 10
US Silver half 11-12
Jefferson and Liberty nickel 12-13"
Mans 14kt gold wedding band 13-14"

Then went outside buried the Jefferson nickel at a
ruled 10" in a target free area. Soil conditions- mostly dirt with sand type mixture with some black magnetite sand thrown in for flavoring.

Results with the 7x11" coil same air test settings as above.
Signal was repeatable, no problems you knew a target was buried.
Target could still be picked up with the coil 4" above the ground, but, may or may not dig that signal.

Switched to all metal mode, same results as above.
Would not pick up the nickel when switched into disc mode.

Put on the Super 6 coil.
Same settings after ground balancing. Repeatable diggable target.
Same performance in 2 tone and all metal but, now can only be picked up with the
coil raised above the ground 1".

I was even under the power lines in the back yard,
did not find it chatty unless you detected the
areas where there is a lot of deep junk.

More than happy with the nickel result, wasn't
sure I was even going to pick it up. Most of the detectors I have owned couldn't pick up such a coin past 7-8". I was surprised on a
freshly buried coin that the Vista Gold responded to the nickel target so well.

The T2 I have here with a NEL Sharpshooter coil can't even get a peep on the 10" nickel, no matter what I did.

Last night we got a torrential rain storm. The ground now is very wet. Grabbed the Gold with the Super 6 coil, that's what was on it. Headed back into the backyard.
Ground balancing took just a touch longer. Swept the coil over the nickel in two tone, all metal and disc modes. Not a peep on the nickel. Interesting.
Wondering if the black sands now in a wet matrix is the cause?
