I know this is a PI forum, but does anyone know of
a VLF forum with a similar level of technical knowledge and expertise?

I don't know if they have a forum, but I believe they have some tech papers and builder notes at

On that page there is a link that says "Tech Forum" and it is hosted by Carl Moreland who is an engineer with Analog Devices. The discussions centre around building and testing your own metal detecting equipment and Carl has gathered a huge list of articles on how to build your own VLF and PI equipment.
