VLF guy thinking of going PI for the beach. ????

Jason in TN

New member
Ok guys I have hunted at some point with almost every current VLF detector currently on the market and was thinking of a PI to hunt
The North and South Carolina coast.

Question one is what would you recommend

Question two Is there any thing out there that I can still get good depth on small gold and avoid bottle caps as there are 1000s of
them at Myrtle beach.

And the last one what if any what advantages would I have with a good PI in the salt over a good VLF detector for beach hunting.

Also do a little relic hunting too if this would affect my decision.

Thanks
Jason

Jason,

I will try to answer. First, I don't think any PI will be able to totally eliminate bottle caps, and some may not be able to at all. There are several PI detectors that have some form of rudimentary discrimination, but I beleive the Garrett Infinium is the only one that is waterproof.

Any of the top models, be it the Whites Dual Field, Infinium, Garrett Mark II, Detector Pro Head Hunter and Tesoro Sand Shark would be good bets. All are water proof to certain depths, so you don't have to worry about the salt water and sea spray.

On last one....the Eric Foster Aquasearch, which is a Goldquest SS waterproofed ( I have a Gold Quest and I think it's one of the best PIs on the market for salt beaches ) would be my choice, but is its twice the amount of some of the others and is not rated past a depth of I believe 6 feet. Since I don't dive, that's what I would get. Since I have 2 of the Goldquests, my project for this year is to try and waterproof one of them !

Eric Foster's are top notch for the beach, u pay more for them but you get a lot more for it too.

Hi king-ghidorah,
how do you think they would compare to the Infinium? Do you have one of Eric's underwater machines?

I couldn't actually tell you. I only have the Infinium. I am just making an educated guess on the extrapolation of the price difference and personalized build quality. :beers: N/T Not ever :.)

Or maybe one of Erics water detectors but there is quite a bit of $ differance.
Would use maybe 30 days a year as that is about all the beach time I have.

Thanks

Is a great unit, and 1/2 the cost of the Aquasearch ( the waterproof version of the Goldquest). If you got the Dual Field, you would have a waterproof PI, 12 inch coil and great depth and good sensitivity to the small targets due to the design of the coil. I hear it pinpoints very well too because of the design.

Jason I have good news and bad news. I just got back from MB yesterday. I did hunt four days. It wasn't about and hour into the first day I then I new something had changed not many pop tops and not any older coins. I spoke to one of the Beach Service folks and they told me the beach was pump in this past winter. The good news there were not to many pop tops. So it will be later in the summer before there will be much gold or silver. I have hunted MB for 30 years and I live there for more than 20. The good news there was already alot of erison and I did find coins from the 80's and a few from the 60's. So all is not lost. By the way I use an Infinium alot but I also us th Sovereign GT. I have found a few very small ladies gold rings with the Sovereign. I have used Sovereigns for at least 15 years. They are great machines at the coast also use the WOT coil from time to time. Love to hunt MB.

Should be here in a couple days. I would like to hear how you guys would run it at Myrtle Beach. Can you tell bobby pins and caps after using it a while. Any info would be appreciated.
Long time VLF user going PI hope this works out OK.

Thanks
Jason

Jason you had a Whites TDI but you sold it right after you got it. I think you were buying a V3. Why did you sell it so fast? I hear its a good machine.

Jim
I just did not like it alot and needed the cash to get the V3 I love it.
Got my PI pro and need to get out to hunt with it did some testing in the back yard so
far. Air testing i do not get much depth on rings but have heard PI detectors do not do well
in air test. Can not wait to get it to the beach for a test run.

Thanks again for the Info Jim i also spend some time at Myrtle beach may have seen you down there before. I will be there starting on the 14th.
Got the PI PRO dual field and have hunted some swim areas up here that get hunted a lot. Got to where I can tell a bobby pin 80% of the time so far
but still dig it all. Am really suprised with the inner coil how well that big old coil pinpoints. So far I like it. Need to get to the beach to dig a bunch to see
how well it does. Still have not dug any thing real deep.
