Waikiki Beach Hunting

This article tells about "German George" a real pain toward tourists. He thinks he owns the beach, but he hunts barefoot, and was practically asking for this. It's not just the water that is full of bacteria right now. My friends and I all wear wetsuit booties, in or out of the water.

Yeah, I would compare him to "Spider" at Virginia Beach. I read the replies at the other "place" where you posted this.

Very amusing! It's amazing how a detectorist with a "PISS-POOR" attitude can affect so many people negatively. Maybe his infection is karma.

George is by far the worst of the rude hunters on Waikiki. At least that is the only place on Oahu that we see him... he has his "route" from Royal Hawaiian to the Zoo, every day. JJ and Daryll will snub you off, or walk right by without a glance, but George goes out of his way to make comments. We have both seen him steal from people's blankets, and we understand he has been arrested a number of times.

As bad as he sounds it's amazing there's worse! I've met a lot of people on the beach- non detectorists types who are just curious. Many of whom I've spoken to remark about how polite Bia and I are. We show them finds and share stories and such. After that they seem suprised and say, "We expected "detectorists" to be grumpy and unsocial people!"

It's people like "German George" that cause this stero-type and cause a negative impact on the hobby. Mostly because people remember the bad before the good.

Oh well... Thanks for the post.. Absolutely great!

He's been on TV three times regarding his infection. Says it isn't spreading, but antibiotics haven't done much good. Maybe he'll be out of commission for a while. He not only hunts barefoot, but digs, and picks up the targets with his toes!

Ye be warned, showing jewelry is grounds for getting yer wares confiscated from you. Some people will go and tell beach patrol that you found "their" whatever. All they need to know is you finds coins and pulltabs. FYI

In 1989 while my wife and I stayed at a hotel along Waikiki beach, I remember the beach being groomed (raked) just as the sun was setting. Then out of no where dozens of locals came out to the beach and swung their metal detectors like crazy.

Within several minutes, they all left and the sun was gone.

I live on Oahu and don't go MDing downtown much any more. But when I do I have only met one "nice" MDer. All the rest seem OLD and Grouchy. The nice one was twenty something and just getting started. There are alot of other beaches to search and you can be gracious anywhere you go !!:twodetecting:
