Thinking about trying the explorer , is it hard to learn, i have been using the original sovereign since early 90s. what is the difference between explorer, xs and explorer 2 and quatro. Thanks in advanace

Sov. is basically a user friendly setup so expect a learning period with the Explorer. Some pick up on it easily while others take longer or eventually put on classifieds. Again only as easy or hard as you want it to be and even the preset program is a formidable set-up..I don't own a Quattro but understand this is basically a user friendly unit similiar to an Explorer and was probably introduced to allow more to use a more user friendly Explorer type unit.Difference between the XS and 11 model is it shows two numbers in digital..both ferrous and conduct and allows one to set threshold to a finer setting. Cosmetic differences 11 model comes with a new black lower rod with a more durable plastic and superior design, new black more durable armrest and has the detector stand built in so one does not have to buy a Sunray acc. stand. All in all an Explorer once learned is a superior unit and I myself have used a Sov. with excellent results. I have to say using an XLT, DFX type units an Explorer is much easier to setup. Use the quickstart until you get the feel, go slow and should have no problems. Indeed
you know how to pinpoint a double D coil so that is a plus just from the get go. Manual and Andy Sabisches book help a lot and a local mentor would surely cut down on the learning period..My advice being a former Sov. user buy an Explorer as its changeable facets allow you to hunt most any area. Do remember many knowlegable forum members so any questions fire away if you decide to upgrade. For you Sov. users indeed a nice unit and if it works for you...go for it...

Consider the Quattro if you have reservations about learning the EX-II. The Quattro is a turn on and go unit with an easy learning curve. It uses the same FBS circuits as the EX-II, is compatible with all Explorer accessories, and Andy Sabisch just released a new book: "Mastering the Quattro." I would recommend getting the book if you want more details about the Quattro before you decide what to buy. As Dan mentions, the EX-II offers a turn on and go Factory Preset mode that I also recommend for new Explorer II owners. If you understand each of the features of the EX-II, it will be a smoother learning curve. The EX-II now comes with a training DVD or Video; your choice. Thanks for the responses , im still attached to my sovereigns/excallibur, still running one with the dixie mods (when we dont have snow frozen ground), its not easy living on the frozen tundra of wisconsin. I will hjave to sell some of my copper and other goodies and finance a quattro or explorer.
