WANTED: Used underwater detector OR Diver experienced with one

New member
Hi-
This may sound crazy, but I recently lost a gold pendant that my husband gave me for my birthday 30 years ago off a dock in a freshwater lake near our home in Southwestern Virginia (Approx 30 miles from Roanoke, VA). The value is primarily sentimental. We know about where it is, and it is in about 10-15 feet of water. The visibility is fair, the bottom is uneven clay with silt in some areas, and there is minimal current. We have not been able to find it visually.
At this point, we would like to consider either buying a reasonably priced underwater metal detector to use in our search (Tesoro stingray or tiger shark have been recommended, but we are open to other suggestions) or we would love to try to arrange a mutually agreeable arrangement for a diver who is experienced in underwater metal detection to search for it.
Thanks,
Nina

A metal detector will find your lost item for sure.
An experienced metal detectorist will do it gratis or for reasonable compensation.
Unless you are both an experienced diver and experienced metal detectorist, I suggest you seek someone to help.
This forum is a perfect place as the overwhelming majority of people on this site are helpful.
The good news is that your item is definitely recoverable in a fresh water lake - if it was the ocean then it would be a completely different story.
Good luck.

Thank-you so much to all who have replied. We have purchased a used Tesoro Stingray II, and right after we bought it also had a reply from a retired police diver about six hours from us. My husband and I are both PADI certified, although we have not done much diving in several years and have no metal detector experience. However, I have to brag that my husband can figure anything out, so we are hoping to find my butterfly ourselves, and if not will call upon the wonderful police officer who offered his expertise. Quite honestly, we had almost forgotten what a wonderful group of people divers are; now that our last kid has left the nest, maybe we'll start diving more. Thank-you again to all for your advice and moral support.

WE FOUND MY PENDANT!!! After two days of a very organized search, my husband, a new detectorist, found it! Thanks to everybody for all of your advice and encouragement. I haven't been able to figure out how to upload a picture (my kids say I'm technotogicaly challenged), but if you want one, email me and I'll send you one.
Thanks again,

Way to go on finding your pendant!!!!

Now when you cant find your husband...just look for the detector and he is probably attached!

Thanks to everyone who congratulated us on recovering my pendant. BTW, Miningtown, if you ever get tired of metal detecting, or want another hobby, please consider being a stand-up comic. Your comment really cracked me up!
Thanks again to all,
Nina and Tom

Hi Nina

I'm so glad that it worked out OK for you. It was nice speaking with you, thank you for phoning back, and letting me know the outcome. Welcome to the world of underwater metal detecting.

Being a first time detector user, underwater at that, the odds were really stacked against you finding it. Nice things happen to nice people, congratulations.

Have a nice day. :)
Mr. Bill

Dear Mr. Bill-
Thanks again for all the advice and encouragement!
Without you, we never would have found our Tesoro Stingray II.
And without your advice, my husband never would have found my butterfly pendant!
YOU ARE TRULY A TREASURE, MR. BILL!!!!
Thanks,
Nina
