Washington Token and Horse Harness Buckle

DanburyTreasure

New member
Hunting at my favorite early 1800's house yesterday, I found a heavy horse harness buckle, and an unusual George Washington token about the size of a quarter. The inscription on the token reads: “American Fabious” “Father of his Country” “First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen, served eight years as president without pay”. I did some research and found this on the Smithsonian site http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/search/object/nmah_1382265. The harness buckle is from a much earlier period, probably the early to mid 1800's based on other items I found in the same area.

I was shocked to see that Mark7 had posted a similar token on July 13th (http://www.findmall.com/read.php?91,2218559). I looked it up, and sure enough the token he found was manufactured by the same company. http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/search/object/nmah_1382273. What an odd coincidence!

Good for you man-Very special indeed -I would be really excided over that one:clapping:----------------------IB

Great job on the post find research... too much of that presidential stuff isnt very old.. im glad you found one of the old ones.. very cool...

Nice find,'s Cool Token. Thanks for posting the link on the one I found.

Talk about coincidence !! I dug this one in a field in CT the same day ( 6:00 pm ) that you dug yours! I was shocked to see your post the next morning. lol
Warren G. Harding token from the same series.

Bruce - That's really strange! It wasn't easy finding information about the Washington token, so it's not like they are very common. They were manufactured in Waterbury. What part of Connecticut did you find your token? I live in Danbury, but I found mine in Lagrange New York.

Hi Barry. I found the token in Wethersfield. I know I have found these in the past but I don't recall which president.

Wow! Thanks for the info on the buckle! The house I dig at was built in three stages. The oldest part is from the 1700's - the second in the early to mid 1800's and an addition on the back in the 1900's. The oldest coin I found was 1798 - but that was next to the newer part of the house. The buckle was found by the old side. Cool!

Nice finds!
