Water resistant vs waterproof coils?

Why does Minelab make their double "D" water resistant, and not water proof? Just bought the Double "D", even though I knew it was just water resistant. All the other manufacturers make all their coild waterproof! Heard nothing but good about the Double "D", and will be anxious to try it out, just will not put that coil into the water!!!!

Run a bead of silicon around where the coil cover meets the coil, and another dab on where the cable enters the coil, and go detecting. The silicon will allow you to splash around in puddles or hunt in wet grass without worry. The difference between waterproof and water resistant is more about the water pressure at certain depths. With the rod, housing and handle set up the way it is, if you get the coil deep enough for pressure to cause water to penetrate the windings, you've probably got the control housing under water too. And the silicon around the coil ain't going to help you out there.

One thing that some folks don't think of, when using their coil in wet conditions, do NOT tip the detector up so the coil is above the housing. The water that accumulated on that coil, cable and rod is going to run right down that cable and into the connector on the back of the housing. So be careful if you get anything wet. JMHO HH Randy

Randy...I have swung my 10.5 DD MF coil in extremely wet grass. I have always rotated my coil toward the ground and let the water run out . A number of times I have raised my coil straight up allowing the water to run out and it some times hits the coil wire. Because of your sound advise I am going to run a bead of silicone around the wire and add a bit of plumbers tape to my water resistant coils. Thanks HH TomB
