Hello All! I'm back with another go around of finds made from this last weekend. I hope it doesn't disappoint in any way so let's get to it, shall we.
Friday Afternoon, it was a very nice day outdoors and at Noon, when I got off of work, I decided to go give the Golf Course in town here another try. The place is just too tempting and it is off limits during the Spring and Summer Months, so I have to enjoy the time I get in it while I can. Anyways, I started hunting on the North Side of the Golf Course and with-in 15 minutes, I found a Square Token Good For 2 Cakes. I am unsure of what brand it was but on the bottom on the back, it mentions Proctor & Gamble, so unsure as to who made it since it looks to have been in or near a fire at one time. When I initially found it, I thought it was just bent...but it turns out that is has been melted a bit and the front is mostly unreadable. After this find, I kept working this side and dug lots of Junk out of it. After awhile, I decided to move onto a different part of the Golf Course. I then found a Religious Pendant and stuck that in my pouch. As I started hunting, I looked up and found Rick(ND) heading out in my direction with his E-Trac. I stopped hunting and chatted with him for a few minutes and told him where I had been finding a few things this year. We then started hunting and it took awhile for either of us to find anything good. I got a couple Targets that were dancing around like Coin with Iron and had Rick check them out. Rick told me Iron and he was right on a few of them. I then got a nice sounding 28 that showed about 6" Deep and had Rick go over it. He told me that at first he didn't get anything but Iron...but when he turned to a different direction, then he caught a good reading part of the time. As I dug it, I told him it was Silver and it was. Out popped a 1903 Barber Dime. We then started hunting for awhile longer and then Rick told me he had to get going. On the way back to his Car, he got an Indian Head Signal and dug it. Out popped a 1906 IH from about 6" Deep. He was pretty happy with that since he didn't get skunked but he really would have liked to find a Barber. I looked at it and told him "way to go" and then he headed to the Car. The only thing was that he had lost the IH either putting his detector in the Car or out at the Gas Station when he pulled his Keys from his back pocket. Oh Well! I was there to witness that he did find one but that doesn't matter anymore since he has found 2 others now. As for me, I stayed until dark, and went waaaay down to the South Side of the Horse Track and found a V-Nickel, an Older Jefferson Nickel, and an Old Button. I am sure there is more Keepers out there somewhere and if I get another chance, I will be back out there trying my best to retrieve a few more before freeze-up.
Now on Saturday, I was suppose to meet up with Dale so we could do some detecting together but I couldn't get a hold of him at all. I waited until around 8:30am (late start) and headed out. The plan was to go to a different spot but that got changed. So I decided to go back where I got the 1865 IH last weekend and work it more. I had lost my Steel Probe for Surface Coins at the site and was hoping to retrieve this while there but it didn't happen. What I think happened was when my PVC Pipe Rivot broke free, the Probe fell down on the ground and the fellow I was chatting with that lived nearby seen me drop it and took it for himself. Reason I believe this is that he came over to chat again and I told him I had dropped it and when I mentioned this, he looked over to his house...like saying to himself... "it's over at my house", but he never told me that. He asked where I had lost it and I told him anywhere up near the front. He walked around looking but I figured that he had already picked it up since I would have found it when I went in the same locations I did a week ago. It didn't matter, he could have it if he does have it at home, I got another one from Rick for free as a gift so thanks again Rick for that Brass Probe.
As I hunted, I was finding a Wheatie here and a Wheatie there but nothing too great. I decided to give the Boulevard Area another try since last time, Dale had found a couple Wheats on them. There is Power Lines directly above this all the way down the street, making the detector go wacko. I had to drop the Sensitivity down to 12 Manual to keep it stable for me to hunt near them. As I got about middle of the Boulevard, and about 2' away from the sidewalk, I got a 27-28 reading that was somewhat warbly, but there was a strong enough Signal that told me to dig so I did just that. I was figuring another Wheatie and had no idea what was to surface. In Smartfind, I would have known, but in Digital, I had no clue. As I dug, I finally seen something Silver that came up with some dirt from about 10" Deep and thought it looked like a Quarter. I lost sight of it when the dirt fell back into the hole and it was covered up once more. I grabbed a fist full of dirt and laid it in the existing pile. I then ran the probe over it and it sang out. I pushed the dirt with the Probe and then there she was. A Walking Liberty Half Dollar! I couldn't believe my eyes! I checked the hole and silent. I filled it back in and as I put the Plug back, I thought to myself..."I'm gonna find another one"! Well, after a few more Wheats and a Half Hour later, I was about to cross over to another section of yard when I looked down and seen just a small area of grass that I didn't pass the Coil over that was about 10" in circumference. I figured I better swing the Coil over it and as I did, I got another Wheatie Hit that did 27-28, and was about 8" Deep. Another Wheatie I thought! I dug a Plug and at 8", another Walker shoots out of the hole and lands in the pile of dirt. I couldn't believe it!!! 2 Walkers from a site that both me and Dale had worked heavily just a week ago! When I seen the first Walker, I told myself..."I don't care if I find that Steel Probe, I got a Walker and that makes up for loosing it by far". I then went out into what appeared to be dirt overturned and got a good 28 that showed about 6" Deep. I dug that and out popped the Hamm's Beer Token, which is a really neat find. I worked a bit more and only found a Wheatie or 2. No other Silver was found on Saturday, only the 2 Walkers. Can you believe that???
Sunday, I decided to try a few different Sites, some Old Sites that I have hunted in the past and some New. First was an Old Fairgrounds that was converted to Ball Diamonds. I tried it for a few hours and only found a Silver Rosie, a few Wheats, and an IH. Site 2 was an Old Park, and I didn't stay long but I did get 3 Wheats from it so there might be something there. I then tried where a Church was at one time and nothing. Must have been overturned of filled. Site 4 was another Park and that is where I ended the weekend at. I got the 2 Junk Tokens, the Canadian Cent, a Merc, a Rosie, and a few Wheats from here but nothing too special. The Rosie I did find though, for some reason read like a Quarter on Smartfind and that is what I was expecting. It was shallow and I thought New Quarter but then the Dime came out and it didn't look right. I wiped off the front a bit and seen the date 1954 so I got lucky on that one, since if it would have read a Dime, I would have most likely left it behind due to all the New Coins I had already retrieved and I was getting tired of picking them up. I also found a newer Dog Tag and a FFA Pin which is also a neat item. It even has the Pin still attached! Well, that's the Story from these hunts and I hope you enjoyed it. Now to the Totals.
I found a total of 6 Silver. They were 2 Walking Liberty Halves dated 1936-d and 1939, 1 Barber Dime dated 1903, a Mercury Dime dated 1943, and 2 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1954 and 1963-d. For Nickels, I found 2 of them. They are a V-Nickel dated 1909 (looks like it was dropped when fairly new due to detail left) and a Jefferson Nickel dated 1941-s. I also found 1 Canadian Penny dated 1920 and 1 Indian Head dated 1892. There were 36 more Wheats found also. They are dated 12,(3)19,29,33,35,35-d,(2)36,(3)37-d,40,40-d,(3)41-d,(3)44-d,45-d,(2)46-d,(2)49-d,(2)50-d,(2)52-d,(2)53-d,54-d,(2)56-d and 58-d. The rest of the finds will be in Part:2. Hope you have enjoyed yet another of my postings and thanks for looking. Good Luck and HH to you all.
