Well I bought a WOT coil the other day, sure hope it comes in handy. Are there any secrets or tricks that I should know about?

Anytime you have an easy one call him over and let him see that he can see it with the stock coil... Don't call him over on the ones that are barely there unless you want him to be getting one too...

In a low trash situation where you have one target, I like to back off the target and come at it again with little short sweeps. When you barely start to hear it, the target is about an inch off the front of your coil.
Throw a quarter on the ground and try it yourself, learn how far in front of the coil you first start to hear the coin.
When you hve more than one target, roll your wrist in towards the center of your body tipping the coil up on the edge so only one part of the coil is touching the ground and the rest of the coil is up in the air.
Using just the edge of the coil you can easily pinpoint individual targets.
Last point is get yourself a Swingy Thingy, because it just makes detecting so much more enjoyable.
Take care!

Get a bigger shovel. <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D"> The WOT is my primary coil. HH Ken

I've seen a number of posts that indicate the WOT is best used in areas that are relatively free of trash. With all respect to those individuals - don't believe it. The WOT is my primary coil and I hunt only in parks and schools. As long as the trash is moderate the WOT will find as many, if not more coins than a smaller coil. When the trash gets heavier I switch the sensitivity to semi-manual on a lower setting and just motor through it. It's surprising what you can find. Of course common sense dictates you switch to a smaller coil if the trash is ultra-heavy. Give the WOT a chance to prove itself in moderately trashy sites after you become familiar with it.
Secondly, I'm a little nuts and many times hunt with the WOT set on manual sensitivity 32. It falses like crazy but the falsing is all a monotone high note, It doesn't change pitch at all. When you run over a good target you still get the flutey oscillation and can investigate further. I first tried this in desperation after my third night in a row at my regular park with no finds. I dug seven old coins in less than two hours this way.
I know this information is no revelation but there is more flexibility to the WOT coil than many people realize. I'm one of those people who leave it on for months at a time and love it. Best of luck to you with your new WOT.

I am a WOT only user. I also am a swingythingy guy to. I have everyone telling me that I am at a disadvantage using it in parks and trashy areas. But!!! When I bought my Explorer II I also bought the WOT and the swingythingy at the same time. I put on the WOT and it is the only coil I use. I tried the stock coil two times and did not last an hour with it. My signals for deep coins come in stronger, and the Explorer seems to be able to ID the object easier and better. I can call off a wheat penny or Indian head or dime at ten inches plus before I even start to dig. I have to work at the pinpointing a little longer because of it trying to give me so much information of shallower targets. But well worth it in the long run. The extra noise you get by the added size of the coil just becomes back ground noise until you hear the sweet sound of a coin pull through it. I started off using the WOT only in the beginning to train myself to be able to use it. And the one thing I learned and willing to share is you must go slow with the WOT on the end of an Explorer. It is feeding so many signals to the detector it has a hard time keeping up unless you move at a very slow pace. As for pin pointing the deep signals. I just try to catch the signal and use small wiggles and drag the coil back towards me. When I lose the signal I know it is just in front of the coil. With the Wot it is rare for you to get a signal from more than one direction unless it is fairly shallow or very little trash. And at times if a shallow target is near you will have a more difficult time pin pointing on the drag back and may have to dig the shallow signal to get a better read on the target you are after.HH Jim

Alright, I give up! What's a WOT coil and where do I get one? <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">
I've only had the chance to use my Explorer once since I bought it last week but I found 2 quarters, a dime, a nickle, two pull tabs, three bottle caps and about a zillion "hot" rocks already so I figure I'm ready for an upgrade, lol.

Neil try going back to the stock coil and back down the sensitivity to10-14 in trashy areas. I think you will be surprised. Found a nice indian 12 inches down in trash last night doing this jp
