Went Back to the Farm fields

Hi All!

Went back to the farm fields. Hoping to keep the streak alive.
Started in one of the middle fields.

Saw a Red Tail Hawk flying around:clapping: I watched for a couple of minutes to see if he was going to make a "find". Just flew off majestically.

Kept a swing'n':detecting:

Hit a good signal.....ID:38
You know what I'm thinking....another Quarter....No way that would happen!
Only way to find out--Dig it!!!!
Search & Recovery operation was a success!
Mike sees me and yells is it a coin???
 was my reply..it's round & looks like a coin. Besides that, had no clue!!
We work on getting the dirt off of it....

It's been posted over on the Explorer Forum to try to find an ID
Explorer Forum--ID of Large Round Copper thingy
Caused quite a stir.
As much as I want it to be a George W. Cent, I firmly believe that it is a smoked Large Cent.:stretcher:
I was going back & forth and watching that thread immensely, but after looking at all the evidence, it appears to me to be a Matron Head Large Cent.
(If you think otherwise, Post it up!!)
Which means I skipped right over the Indian Head Cents!! (Hope it works out that way for the nickles, dimes, 1/2's & dollars!!):yo:

Moved over to the Silver field...we were cross-threading it to see if we could find something we missed the first time by hopefully hitting it at a different angle.
Learned I can't seem to walk in a straight line:buds:

Found the flat button at one edge of the field. It came up a solid 30. Near the top--2-3 inches. ALMOST didn't dig it, but targets were few & far between...so it was a lets see what's down there type feeling VS this is something good feeling. Turned out to be good!

Yeah, those Large Cents...great to find but hard to get a nice looking one around here. Still a thrill though. I think there may be another one out there in better shape...hopefully Saturday we will see!

Nice post!

Interesting find. I haven't heard of a "smoked" large cent. Is it because it was found in fire effected ground? Just wondering. I like the buckle and button too!:detecting:

The ground here is NOT kind to old Coppers:cry:
So they don't come out looking that nice--unfortunately!
It was my way of saying that it was not far from being junk.
So you can pick your own adjective/noun to describe it: smoked, slug, copper sinker, etc. etc.

Hey Meander, you think you have ground that's hard on copper, I went out a few times to one of our local "dog parks", because they're in an older area, and sure enough I found some stuff, and of course I also found some "stuff", (if you know what I mean), in other words you have to be careful where you dig, but when I finally found some Penny's, they we're almost wiped out with corrosion. Hmmmmm. Geeeeee. I thought at first, but then I started thinking, I wonder what dog droppings and such does to a copper coin over a period of time? Not sure if that was the reason, but I'm REALLY,:(SHYing away from the dog parks for hunting.:O:|I swear I'm not making this up, though, it really is true. Marc, from San Diego.:O:|

As kind of an "adjunct" to that post, I went home and just for fun, hooked up the electrodes "in my Frankenstein lab", (you know, the electrolysis method of cleaning) (with the 9vold battery) and it took off the corrosion all right, ALONG WITH THE DATE, LINCOLNS HAIR, AND A FEW OTHER THINGS. That electrolysis method really works, but it sometimes works too good.;)

I haven't gotten as far as making an electrolysis rig yet, but from what I've read, electrocuting copper is NOT a good thing :stretcher:nor the preferred way for Coppers.

(But I'll probably do it once, once I get one set up, to see what it does out of curiosity)
