Went Digging Sunday. 1744 King George Copper and - -

BARKER

New member
Hi Folks; Couldn't Post before now. Was sick. Better now. Anyway I went digging last Sunday at a Colonial Farm and found a 1744 King George Large Cent, (Copper). A One piece button, 1700's and a TWIZZER, A round lead toy looks like a washer with a hole in the center. They put a string through the hole and then spun it around making a whirring noise. I like it. I've found several over the years. I'm kind of spoiled when it comes to detecting here in Boston because of all the history around me. I love it. I search sites that date to the 1600's - 1700's.The only time we search anywhere else is if we are just fooling around like at the beaches. We even find musket balls from the 1700's at the beach during low tide. anyway, I just thought I'd share some finds with you. Soon, I'm getting a camera so I can start Posting pictures ok. I can hardly wait for the camera. Anyway, Until later; May God Bless You All. PEACE:RONB

I came over that way last year with two friends. We had a guy from another forum that said come on out and I will take you to colonial sites. We drove over 800 miles to CT. The first day he stood us up. The next day he told us to meet him at a site and when we got there he never showed. He called later and said on his way down he decided to turn around and hunt a different site. He made plans to get with us the last day but we said no thanks. We went and hunted the beach and an old park. The trip was fun but disappointing to say the least.
I hope to try again sometime. I would love to dig some 1700's and earlier coins.

Congrats Barker on the nice old, oldie! Dont think I would like living N. E. because of the cold weather but I'm sure it has some fine old sites for :detecting: and finding some really nice goodies! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty

I note you say it is a "cent" which surprises me - I thought that it would be a penny. I had no idea that the Brits minted cents.

Thanks for the name "twizzer". I made one for my grandson a few weeks ago and had no idea what it was called. We played with them as kids.

My brother and I used large buttons with two holes and twine and had fun with them, but I think we called them Whizzers....not sure though...even made one for my youngest daughter to show her what we used to play with! Cliff made all kinds of toys for himself out of Prince Albert and other tin cans, small wagon hoops and we played in the sand, swung from saplings and went wading and swimming in the creek or crick as some folks would call smaller streams, couldn't afford many store bought toys, so made up games and used whatever we could to play with....even canned witchhazel nuts in mom's old fruit jars! Was a more peaceful time back then, even though farming was hard work and had to get up early to get the work done before the school bus came to pick us up at 7:00 am. I have many memories but have forgotten a lot too!

May God Bless! Ma Betty

Hi Ma; Just a fast note. They can be called Whizzers or Twizzers it is the same toy. Main thing is they were fun. But now you know how old they can be. I believe they date to Medieval Europe and were brought here by the first Settlers in the New World. I hope this helps. PEACE:RONB

Hi; What our Saying is partially right. The coin is actually called a PENCE. They were brought here to the new colonies from England. As time passed people started using their own local terminology. Hence the name PENCE became CENTS even though the first actual CENT was not minted OFFICIALLY here until 1793. Thus the term CENT was used very loosely prior to 1793. I hope this helps. PEACE:RONB

Hi Mike; Sorry to hear that. I've had that happen to me as well. Makes me very angry to hear that. I guess there are idiots everywhere. I'd be glad take you guys out on a hunt. I Do NOT drive but if you met me I'd be glad to take you to some very old sites. God I can hardly wait to be able to Post pictures. You'd fall over.!!!! You could even come to my Club as well. Great bunch of guys. The folks here are "NOT" like that jerk. We are usually very friendly and open to go digging. Here Deectings is a fine art. hahaha. Anyway, Our digging Season is usually September to Mid December. That's after the bugs and vegetation die down. We even go out digging in snow storms. The snow doesn't really freeze the ground in the woods and we're protected from the wind as well.Anyway We'll talk ok. PEACE:RONB

I may just take you up on that! Check out our club at swmss.org
