Went for a walk with the GTI today and was supposed to have teemed up with a local detectorist....

who is 81 years young. He saw me swinging my detector on Saturday, on yet another very poor day for targets, only 2 coins. and we arranged to hunt the local showground together. Unfortunately he didn't show, so I hunted alone, mostly.
I hadn't been going for more than 2 mins, when a group of about 20 Rural Fire Service folk come out of a meeting and walked past me.A few pulled up for a chat, with a lady in the group telling me that she'd recently bought a detector (X-Terra) and was keen to get into the hobby. She and a couple of others that were with her, were from Sydney. They were organizing a large scale competition (State or Nation championships).Anyway, after the chat, I continued to hunt for 2.5 hours.
I recently switched back to using the imaging coil and after having a break from the GTI, I found that it seemed to be helpful, as I seemed to be somewhat more tuned into the audio, which makes for enjoyable hunting.
There weren't too many good targets, with the first one being a 20c piece. They seem to be the only coin that I can find lately. Finally, about a half hour later, I turned up my first goldie for the day. It was a $1 coin which was a commemorative one ( I think that it was minted to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the end of WWII). It had the picture of the dancing man on it (taken from a very famous bit of film that was taken in 1945 of the celebrations on the streets of Sydney). As I'd only one one other gold coins in the last several hunts, I felt like dancing a bit of a jig myself. Ended the hunt with $7.40. Nothing earth shattering, but the last 3 hunts have yielded less than $2 in total.
I seem to be having long term problems with water vapour showing up on the inside of the display (about 18 months). I have talked the my local Garrett dealer a couple of times about it (including today) but haven't resolved it yet. I have taken it apart to let it dry out side a few times, but it hasn't worked. He has suggested retuning it for a service, but I'll try and place some of those moisture absorbing crystal packets in there to see if that will solve it, otherwise, I'll have to part with it for a few weeks. Has anybody else experienced this problem? I'm wondering how safe is it to operate the GTI in light rain. These days, if it even looks close to threatening rain, I'll grab another detector. It's a bit of a shame, 'cause I'd like to be able to trust that it should at least be able to cop at least a light shower without being effected by it.

Is it condensation or from the rain for the dampness inside ?
When I hunt in a light rain I usually cover the main housing with a clear plastic bag.
I've seen what hot humid days (sauna ) heat will cause condensation on detectors coming out from air conditioned house
will do.
Likely internal condensation till the insides parts of housing acclimatises to outside temp and atmosphere.

Awesome hunt!:clapping:Congrats on the gold!:cheers:Good clad haul, too!:detecting:Yeah man, I've got a couple machines that'll fog up on me like Joel was talkin' about or while using in the rain(with a plastic sandwich bag on the control box, of course). I don't think it's any big deal. They still work fine.
Thanks for sharing!:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

It's probably from a light shower. We actually have fairly low humidity in these parts.Been in drought for more than 8 years. looks like it's breaking now; finally. Winter can get more moister in the air, which is when it first occured. I've just been a bit concerned that the continual presence of water inside could cause damage to the circuit board over time.

It's possible Lazy. I used to lean them up against my wardrobe door which was close to a window. I now keep them inside the wardrobe so as to prevent moister getting to them. I think that the missus prefers it too. I don't mind waking up and seeing them lined up first think, but I think that she might have.
