Had permission to hunt a woods. I had to take a tractor path to get there. about two miles. about a hour into the hunt a feeling of pending doom was coming my way.and I couldn't shake it off. I'm Not one that gets easily spooked about anything even my 357 on my hip didn't make feel better. I'll tell you this boy was getting out of there . Don't if I'll ever go back there. Has this ever happen to anyone out there ? Graw :yo:

A couple times things just didn't feel right so I left. I can only wonder what might have happened if I had stayed. But I know that nothing happened because I left and that's the most important thing. I do believe the Lord speaks to us through our conscience and such. Even when I have my gun on , like you, I have had the same experience. No dig can be worth something bad happening to us. Steve in so az

been several times for me too to have a feeling of uneasiness. Didn't stick around to find out what might have happened as Steve mentioned.

The Holy Spirit and the angels are on our side for our safety. Thank you God for the protection you have given us in unknown circumstances. Continue Father to help keep us out of harms way. In Jesus name. Amen!

Yes, Graw..plenty of times....and I don't carry a weapon. other than that heavy scoop.

It's sometimes scary when I go detecting alone ....depending if there are many people walking the beaches or no one...

When I get that feeling, I just leave......pronto!!

and not find out! Good talking with ya tonight!

I have been lurking here somewhat and finally I have a story to tell. I was detecting a couple of years ago at a local church. I would always go at night so as not to disturb anyone there because they seem to have functions almost every day. There is a graveyard next to the church and I had been detecting close to the graveyard. (I never go into the graveyard out of respect) Now, I had detected close to the graveyard at night many times without even the thought of being afraid, but this time I had a really bad feeling come over me and actually RAN to the car and went home. I probably looked very foolish running with all of my stuff but I was terrified.

The church is on the corner of 2 very well traveled roads so I have always been puzzled about this because it wasn't like I was out in the middle of nowhere.

Nice to finally join.

Thanks for the interesting post, Barb

You did the right thing . Trust your instincts; you never know....

Well this seems to be a interesting subject. and I agree with all of you. God does work in mysterious ways. Thanks all for your input.-- Graw :yo:

you don't have to lurk....we don't bite...though some of us might be getting close to the age of 'gumming' .

It is wise to pay attention to your feelings when out detecting. Luckily we leave not knowing what it was that 'spooked' us but we are safe.

What state are you in Barb? I am sure there are clubs and other detectorists in your area. What detector do you run (not that even having one is a requirement here) - just curious...probably others here may have the same detector too.

Well, God bless you Barb and all yours

I had an experience once when out in the heavy woods. My Great Great Grandfather is buried in an old civil war cemetery that has not been kept up for years, About 5 miles out in the woods from the nearest maintained road. So - one fine day about 10 years ago I got the brilliant idea of cleaning it up. I headed out - alone - to the spot and started cutting down the trees and picking up trash. It started getting dark on me, but I had that "feeling" I was not alone. Well - I was alone actually, but it sure didn't feel like it. Last tree to cut (an old stump with suckers growing on it). I hit the suckers with my chain saw when there it was. A coiled up Copperhead snake in the center of the old stump (laying in the rotted out center). Instinct took hold and without thinking, I hit the thing with my chain saw. Well - I didn't even think about what would happen next. When I hit him with my saw, the blade grabbed hold of him and threw him right up into my chest. I didn't get bit - but talk about scaring the bejeebers out of me!!!! The snake was around 5 feet long and 2 inches wide.

I threw my stuff in my truck and headed home. When I went back out to finish things up (two weeks later), I brought a friend along. Sad part of it - I went back last year to visit the old grave and noticed someone had tried to dig up my Great Great Grandpa's grave. About a two foot hole in the center of his grave. My Grandfather told me (he is gone now) that his Great grand dad was buried in his Civil War uniform (which was the norm back then, as most people didn't have anything dressy to get buried in except maybe an old war uniform). His grave was predominantly marked with his old civil war outfit (he was a yank). I guess someone was thinking of getting to his old uniform or something. I filled it back in. Funny - My Great Great Grandfather on the other side of the family is also buried in the same cemetery and was a confederate. Also - lots of grave stones were broken, turned over, and missing. It's also really grown over again, lots of empty beer cans, drug paraphernalia, and other trash laying about. One marker had a pentagram spray painted on it. One note - back in those days, many graves were never marked or just had a rock to mark the spot. So - even if you think you are not detecting where their might be graves - you may be right on top of one. Lots of baby markers in those old grave yards too (back during the time when the pox and such things was rampet). I still get creepy feelings whenever I visit that grave yard. It's too far gone now to even think of cleaning back up again....and too creepy.

That is a sad story; why isn't that cemetery maintained?

I have a suggestion: The town could request a club, or group of volunteers , or Boy Scouts, High School Students to take this on as a project.

They could clean up and maintain this sacred ground out of respect for those who gave their lives so bravely in battle .

From the land of the Bluenose.....when you hear yourself talking to you......listen for you may miss something importatnt. Know the feeling me bouy!

Well that would be a great idea. It's also where lots of unmarked Indian graves were put. Most of them are not marked - and were in those days - placed on the other side of the fence (if you can believe that one, but it is very true). My father told me when he went by it last summer, a old fellow had bought the adjoining mountain land, put up a shanty, and is dumping his trash in and around the old cemetery (old stove, refrigerator, burning barrels, bed mattress, etc.). He also put up a 6 foot chain link gate across the access road into the cemetery (not his property) and put a chain and lock on it. I called the sheriff and was told I would have to file a complaint, and would also likely end up in court over it in order to make him take down the gate. Well - as you may already know - things don't come cheap here in the states when lawyers and judges get involved with anything. All it would probably take is for the sheriff to go up and tell the man to take down the fence. But those bunch of country law in the out back of Oklahoma have not got the "cahoonas" anymore. I guess they would rather spend their time passing out speeding tickets in the many speed traps in that neck of the woods. My dad said the man that put up the shack is nuts, a drunkard, and carries a shotgun with him everywhere he goes. Thinking maybe I might just happen to go by the old cemetery this summer when I drive down for a visit with my folks - with a large chain in the back of my truck. I think maybe the gate might just happen to get accidentaly damaged and all that trash magically appear in the mans front yard (if you want to call it a yard). I guess it's the old Marine coming out in me. Now I know that's not the way a Christian should act - but, what do you do when you have to deal with a crazy person that stays drunk 24 hours a day and uses the country side as his personal dumping ground? Even a cemetery. Any suggestions I am all ears.

Old cemetaries are often trashed...vandals and drunks out for a fun time out where few people will see them smoking pot and/or drinking.

We have an 1800s ghost town up here (mostly overgrown by trees) and the cemetary is always being vandalized. There is also a movie made about this cemetary. Will have to try to find the trailer for it.

Too bad there is little respect for the dead. People use cemetaries now too for jogging...few cars to run them down though I did hear of some joggers using a cemetary once and some mean guy came out of hiding and severely beat the people. He was later arrested...a mental case...one never knows who you will find in a cemetary or near it.
