You probably had everything in the ferrous range notched out.
Anybody knows that the pot the gold is in is made of iron!
So your machine nulled out the iron pot and obviously couldn't read the gold coins through the thick iron!!!
Makes me sick just thinking about it!
Next time go to to 'all metal' mode when you see the rainbow will ya!

Try detecting while parasailing
coz rainbows don't touch the ground. They are actually a full circle but we only see half of it.
