Wet vs dry soil conditions

Can anyone testify to the loss of performance when detecting in dry vs wet soil conditions? My observation is that I probably loose 20% in depth if not more when the ground is dry. What do you think?

I'd go with that, and also, coins that are on edge are not seen too, the wetter ground helps to find them on edge coins with ease.

I'm not sure of the percentage, but it's a fact that we soil conducts better than dry. It's one of the laws of nature.

I would say that might be a correct statement. Coins always seem to lock on better too in moist ground.

I think trashy ground is worse when wet. To much conductivity.

My experience has always been wet soil is better, it appears to improve the conductivity making the targets stronger. Turnmaster may have a point though, the trash will conduct better too. I don't think that I would describe it as a "loss of depth" but rather when wet an "increase in depth", kinda the half full/half empty thing. I think that it all goes back to comfort and experience with your particular machine, an experienced guy with an average machine will probably do better than an inexperienced guy with a good machine.

I have days when targets seem easy to find, other days you really have to work for good targets. I like to have one good find to start the day just to get a feel for the target reaction sound, that sets the tempo.

Thanks for this topic. I have been working a gravel parking lot for a while now which is partially in the shade so that ground stays moist much longer. I get to that edge between the wet and dry ground and I immediately get deeper targets in the moist ground . I thought it was my imagination. Now I know. I am going to redo the entire lot once the rain hits. Sweet!!!! It will be like and entire new lot after the rain hits. Keep up the good topics. Thanks all!!
