What are the advantages of tuning to FE vs Cond?

Reggie

New member
Some say to use FE to tune and some say it's better to tune to Conductivity. What are the advantages of tuing either way? Does it really matter?

Basically going to FE allows you to run open screen, or as little discrimination as possible. In Conductive the sounds go from low pitch at the bottom of the display to high pitch at the top of the screen. If you are in Conduct nails and small iron- which hit top left, and silver/copper which hits upper right, sound the same. Since there are small iron chunks pretty much everywhere you detect you need to be able to tune these signals out. In Conduct the only way to do this is to use some discrimination, either a bit of iron mask or X out nails/screws.

In Ferrous low pitch is the left part of the screen, high pitch is on the right. Now iron sounds will be low pitched, silver/copper high pitched. The only issue here is that bottle caps which hit in the lower right part of the screen will now sound good. This is the only area I discriminate out.

In Ferrous nickels and other low conductivity coins that hit farther to the right will sound higher pitched.

About the only time I don't use Ferrous is in areas with lots of aluminum screw tops and pull tabs.

Hope this helps

Thank you for that explanation. So when I do find lots of lifttabs or shredding cans, I set to Cond. Otherwise, I tune to FE. Got it.
NOW, if tuned to FE, would it help to run 25% iron mask?

You should have no iron mask, zero, wide open to hear everything which means iron junk will have a low tone. The only items when you use ferrous that have high tones will be coins and those old crown cap and you can go to the edit mode to block out the crown cap. I use Conduct 90% of the time with iron mask set at -13 and if it starts to null to much I set it -15 iron mask, the only time I use ferrous is when the ground is muddy or after a good rain. There is now way you can hunt in conduct without using some kind of iron mask. Send me an email with your phone number and I can go in to detail about ferrous and conduct.

Chris, great explaination. Also, if you are using digital when hunting in Ferr the response is based on the Ferr number. Which for me tends to bounce a little more than the Cond does, but not enought to change the tones significantly. I do find myself having to look at the screen more when using cond if i dont use much IM. I normally hunt in Ferr with nails and crown caps disc out.

Reggie,

Most of the trash in the ground is iron bit, nails, fence, screws, etc. If I run with no discrimination in Ferrous these make a low pitch sound which I can ignore. If I'm detecting a place where there are lots of shredded cans and other targets that sound high pitched in Ferrous mode I sometimes switch to Conductive. Basically I don't want to have to look at the screen evvery target; the idea is to filter out as much with your ears instead of looking at the screen. In places of high conductivity trash I will usually just discriminate out the whole lower 2/3 of the screen and the left side about 1/4 of the way.

Most everyone that does well with the explorers use as little discrimination as possible and listen to what the machine is telling you is in the ground. Some people that use conductive run with a little bit of iron mask. For those that want to run with no ferrous discrimination(left side of the screen) you have to be in Ferrous or you would end up in the loony bin in short order.

If you are using discrimination the machine will almost constantly be in a null which tells you very little.

Chris

Chris how do you blackout the whole lower 2/3 of the screen? I know how to use iron mask to blackout the left side, but not how to blackout the bottom portion? Surely you don't use the box and move it around till the bottom 2/3 is black? Reggie

Ferrous sounds and iron mask wide open. In the event you run into a lot of small iron which creates a seemingly constant barrage of low tones. Simply close the screen by 1 or 2 clicks. (31 or 30 on the iron mask screen. This will cut the noise by at least 1/2.
If you are in a pull tab infested area or as someone said, a shredded can area. The best remedy is to slow down. Not discriminate out. The potential loss of good targets by using that amount of discrimination is overwhelming. Clean the area of debris by digging those iffy targets and post your otherwise lost finds.
