What coil do most of you use on saltwater beaches when using your Explorers?

I use a 12.5-Inch EXcelerator on my Ex II when I'm at the Outer Banks or Myrtle Beach. You can crank up the sens and it's pretty light.

Hi Frank, I really like my Sunray X12,
but will give my Coiltek WOT next day out...
The X12 is no heavier than the standard coil!

I've used Doc's WOT coil and Sunray's 12.5" coil for years. If the WOT coil wasn't so heavy I'd use it more just because it gives the most coverage and a tad more depth. I use Sunray's coil the most because you can swing it all day. If I'm only going to be out for a couple of hours I'll go with the WOT but if I'm out for an all day hunt the Sunray is what goes on. I did buy the new Excellerator 10X14 coil but I haven't used it yet (and it weighs a ton too). I also feel the Sunray is a little bit more sensitive than the WOT coil.

I'm with you Randy, that Sunray is a beauty...
I'm guessing the depth advantage of the WOT is not that much.
I too have a WOT and a Sunray X12.
I must get to the beach and do a test, there was a guy who stuck nickels to the end
of various lengths of wooden dowel, or broom handle.
He was able to shove these into the sand and get instant test targets at various depths.

I'm a "gunna"... Gunna do this one day!:detecting:

Yes, all hail the Sunray, Sunray has been working best for all my outings so far...
lighter and more sensitive compared to WOT...
I really recommend that you give the Sunray a try...definitely wont disappoint you...

All the best! Keep up the good work! Hope there is more to come for you in the future...

Just curious.....

Elton, if you're asking what I think you're asking, I don't think it's that the temp will be that much lower, it's that the beach may be more diggable.

At least that's my theory and something I've been meaning to ask but haven't gotten around to. It doesn't work for freshwater sand beaches though. :( I found that out this winter. I think that stuff was worse than regular frozen ground--closer to concrete.

But I just looked it up and I find that "ocean water with a typical salinity of 35 parts per thousand freezes only at ?1.8

Depends on the beach and whether or not your in the surf, wet sand or dry sand. Some places, I get better depth with the stock coil than the larger coils, especially in areas of extreme mineralization (wet black sand) and others, the bigger the coil, the better (dry sand). The whole thing is a basic experiment, but a quick rule of thumb is the dryer the sand, the larger a coil will stay stable and give you depth. Snowy makes a real good point of the X-12 being lighter than stock and yet bigger, can't go wrong with a SunRay, they are also waterproof.
