What detectors we use, and Why we use them. Also, reports on exciting finds.

Yes, I am using my Teknetics Omega and the G2 for most of my hunting, as well as a White's XLT. We read, all the time, how both newcomers and experienced searchers are looking at (or for) a new model to maybe 'upgrade.' Generally, such desires are to have more control on the detector or a different set of features, such as visual TID or audio Tone ID. Maybe they are looking for a lighter-weight detector? Certainly we read or hear, so often, that they want to find difficult-to-locate targets such as gold coins or gold jewlery, or maybe just find older coins such as silver or 'V' nickels or Indian Head pennies. Without a doubt, that terrible topic of 'depth' seems to enter the conversation, too.

Well, I get asked these types of questions a lot, and frequently the discussion revolves around the makes and models of detectors that I and other members of our society use. I can assure those asking that many active participants in our searches, as a group or just their personal field results, have been, are, and will continue to be, using most of the detectors we currently use. They have worked before, do today, and ought to hang in there for most hunting applications.

Just look at the different makes and models offered by all major manufacturers. Some just don't 'fit' my personal likes and others do. Some newer entries appeal to me, such as White's MXT Pro and Teknetics G2. I use what works and, sometimes, I make a move to a different detector if it does something new and exciting or different. By the same token, many detectors I've owned can still do the same jobs well.

I simply mention this because most of us own and use more than one detector, and most of us have had our moments of success on some historic site projects, or just out having a good time as a hobbyist. So, as we get various members submitting their good finds and some of their experiences, you might see different makes and models. Just keep in mind that if that detector worked for that person, it doesn't mean you need to rush out to find one, or question their other detectors, either. As I stated, most own 2 or 3 detectors, and slow-but-sure I see a new Teknetics or White's model finding it's way into their personal detector arsenal, while a couple of brands seem to have been on the decline in performance or answering consumer's requests.

So, just for fun and a little taunting, here is a quick look at one desired find my #1 detector hunting buddy found a few years back. I've asked her, and some other associates, to write up an article about a particular find, about their choice of detectors, and a bit on the types of sites they enjoy hunting. Many are busy with the holiday season upon us, but it makes a good cabin-fever project that will bring some personal stories come December.

Do YOU have a particular favorite find? Have you ever taken the time to write about it for others interest or enjoyment? It might not hurt, and it doesn't take the newest detector to do so. This photo is better than the copy of it on the society's website (ahrps.org) and my #2 Hunting Buddy found one that a few years ago that should have been mine. :( I'm trying to get some photos of her finds and ask for her contribution in the near future, too.

Don't let winter shut-in get you down (if you live in such wintry sites). Just think of what has been found, then plan ahead to figure out where you can go to add to your braggable finds!

Happy Hunting,

Monte

Great post, Monte-especially for all the interested new purchasers and questions they have. That lil' Compadre you finally convinced me of has been not only fittin' my income,so to speak, but has found some amazing things. Hope to get my camera back up and join everyone.
