What differences can I expect with the 11" DD coil over the stock coil on a F5?

I guess I'm asking if it's worth the price.

Thanks:thumbup:

You will see increased target separation and increased ground coverage. If your ground is mellow enough you will also see a little more depth, but the main characteristics are separation and ground coverage. It has its place but I don't think it is a coil that you replace the stock coil with. I prefer the stock coil and use the 11" in places where I can use it's specific characteristics the best.

Good luck,
Mike

I was able to dig up your review of the coil back earlier this year. Thanks for your input. Then I am assuming that the 5" DD is a better investment to give the F5 better flexibility.

Lets look at the coils. Both the 11" and the 5" DD are speciality coils, additional tools, which allow your detector to perform better in different site conditions. I haven't posted much about the 5" coil yet because I haven't got to hunt much in the last 60 days (that is soon to change though) and I wanted to put a side by side comparison of all three (4 if you count the little 4" BH coil) together. But I do have a little time on it.

This is what I do know about the 5" coil: It will drop your FE ground readings. It will hunt in very high to extreme trash. It will enhance the micro jewelry and prospecting ability of the F5 (I need to post some pictures) So if I'm hunting a site that has extreme trash, I'm going to be running the 5" coil. If I have located a good area for micro jewerly (thin chains, earring backs and posts, etc), then I'm going to be running the 5" coil.

However, If I'm cherry picking in that 7' feet alongside the park sidewalk that contains the usual amount of foil, tabs and bottle caps, I'm going to run the 11" coil because the extra ground coverage combined with the additional target separation makes it the better coil for the site. If I'm cruising outside the hot spots at the park or atheletic fields, I'm going to be using the 11" coil because the ground coverage is more important and I'll get more and better finds with the 11" coil.

I guess I should also mention the little 4" BH coil. It will air test 5" to 6" but has trouble in the ground once you add minerals just because it is not tuned to work specifically with the F5. However...it is a little laser (and I do mean laser!). The bad part of this is that the target area of the coil is about the size of a quarter. So imaging sweeping a coil the size of a quarter on the end of your rod. I much prefer the 5"DD coil over the 4"BH coil because of the better depth and ground coverage of the DD, but again there are sites where this coil might be the better choice.

Its how and where you hunt that makes one coil better than the other. Just review the sites you normally seek out and hunt the most and let them drive your assessory coil selection.

I like the stock coil, but since getting the 11" I haven't put the stock back on.

As Mike said, the big thing is the target separation is better with the 11" DD and of course you can cover more ground. In my moderate soil the 11" seems to be slightly deeper, but the difference is not large.

Pinpointing is trickier and takes more practice with a larger DD coil. The detector is not quite as well balanced with the 11" on, but that's not a big deal.

The big downside is Fisher priced this coil high. And after prepaying for the coil I wound up paying $20 more to the dealer because Fisher raised the price even more than originally stated when they finally got around to releasing the coil.

If you keep your eyes open for a nice used one you can probably save quite a bit.

I'll more than likely go ahead and get both but will start with the 11".

Marco, I think the reason the coils are high is because they are only good on the F5 and I don't see a lot of people out there flocking to buy one. Supply and demand.

Mike, thanks so much for your input also. My ground in East Tennessee is very low as far as mineralization (runs 45 on the meter). But I do go to the beach once a year. I have tested the stock coil on the F5 against my Deleon with the 8X9. Both pick up my test garden almost equally in DISC. But in AM, the F5 beats the Deleon by a good 2" just slightly picking up my 12" buried quarter, though no ID. The Deleon won't pick it up even in AM though I'm sure the controls on the F5 are an advantage in tweaking the signal.

It'll be interesting to see how the 11" will do. I don't see why more people don't own these, I think this is one of the better detectors Dave Johnson has designed.

Thanks all.

Dan

Let us know how that 11" DD does on that 12 " deep quarter. The F5 isn't a bad little detector...Lot of bang for the buck !

I have all three coils and they all have an advantage depending on your situation. The Stock coil seems to be the smoothest running for me. Both with the 5 and the 11 I need to turn gain down slightly to keep machine stable. I got the 5 first and it really excels in trashy areas. I got the 11 for hunting fields to cover more ground and the target separation is more like the 5 and you don't suffer a depth loss because of the size. I find the 11 throws the balance of the detector off a little bit. Pinpointing for me has been right on with all three.

Take care

Bob
