I just received a new Expolorer II Pro today, and I almost could not get the alkaline batterries installed in the tray? Is that normal? How many more years of College do I have to take before this machine starts making a little sense? I will not give up until I learn it, but am used to a Sov. XS, Advantage, and Fisher Excel, and needless to say they are not anywhere nearly as complicated as this machine. I really like the sounds, and think it will be a great machine once I learn to operate it correctly.

The batteries go in tight that is the way it is. Dont know why

Pop the battery caser open by flexing it with the door out. Then compress the coils with a pair of pliers. If this doesnt do it, cut off a coil or two with some wire cutters. Rgds, bing
p.s. or you can call minelab and theyll send a good set to you for free.

it will all get easier including the batteries ... good luck and HH

Simple iron mask setting, say -8 or -10, moderate sens. of about man. 20, and you will be on your way. There is no reason to get it into anything else at this point, and besides you are still gettting very good performance with that. Knowing the sounds and how targets react is the key, not fancy programs.
Alks. suck to get in.

it's a test.
the explorer has a high new-user failure rate.
usually, first time out, you'll walk right over silver, and it won't let you find any.
i heard new users cuss and swear at the thing for the first 30 hours of use or so.

if you stick with it though, and learn every setting, you'll likely be shocked at what it can do.
first step is figuring out the battery pak though.
since you have a II, at least you won't have to try to figure out the yoke cover.
good luck.

Hi Mike, I have the E and the EII. My Explorer has a much tighter fit on the batteries than my Explorer II. I always thought it odd that they fit so tight. They slide in ok until about half way then it is like the pack hits something that you have to force it by.
If you can get the batteries in and out by hand don't worry about the tight fit. If you have to use pliers or something to get them in or out call Minelab and get it fixed.
When I started using the Explorer I had a little experience using the Excalibur. To me the Explorer was a snap to learn - dug a measured eleven inch wheat cent on my first time out at a local park. Just listen for those repeating signals. It will become very easy after some use.
Best of luck and HH - Robin

I have to use a really small flat bladed screwdriver to get one side in. I'm just glad to know it isn't just me. I really like this machine, but thought it was a little odd to have such a struggle with the battery tray. I liked Bing's suggestion, but I can get to one spring, but if I break the tray trying to get to the spring on the opposite end I guess I get to buy a new tray. I realize it can't be a major expense I just hate to buy something for a new machine (especially if I break it). But, thanks for letting me know that you have the same problem. From what everyone has shared it seems to be a common glitch, but better than too loose a fit. Probably doesn't go over too big in the field either.

You should send it in. Do not modify it by yourself - you may void the warranty. Does it really feel to you like those tiny springs are causing the problem? I doubt that very much. Send it in for a fix. For the money you paid it should be right. If you have to use a screw driver it will eventially break.
Call the repair folks at Minelab they should let you know how long it will take and if it is going to cost you anything.
HH - Robin
