What is this??

I found this on a vacant lot, gave a heck of a hit, being all copper! I have a nickel on top of it for size reference, but the "can" is just about the size of a tuna fish can. It kind of looks like the top part may come off, but the item is empty. On the side, it has a spot where it may have been attached to something. One of my friends said it may have been a float, like a toilet bowl float??? Your ideas will be appreciated.

Almost all crapper floats are round like a ball and are not copper . This might be a float but for a gas tank or old fuel oil tank ... what does the forum think ? Woodstock

I remember seeing one of those when I was a kid . . . just can't remember where!?! I'll have to ask my dad, he knows everything!

I don't remember what they were called but it looks similar to something that was used to heat things. I believe you lit whatever was in the can.

I don't believe it is a sterno can. The vintage ones were not as big around and were taller. They also were made of brass......not copper like this "can".

Maybe a MRI can ................

MRI, you mean MRE? I don't think food would be canned in a copper can.

looked kinda like the old heat canister that was for heating only.( Water etc). meal wasn't in the heater part. Maybe not ..memory isn't that great anymore..

I asked my 87 year old dad, he thought he had seen one somewhere also, but didn't know where.

n/t

Thanks, but I don't think so. It is hard to tell, but the last picture where I show the spot on the side, it looks like something was attached to this "can" at that spot. I really don't know what it is. Maybe sooner or later someone will know for sure or have a picture of one in much better shape and tell me what it is.

I'm thinking that it's a float valve float from an old livestock watering trough, or it could be a carburetor float.
First picture in the hand is a float from a trough valve and the picture second is from a carburetor.

it could be that, but it isn't exactly like the one i found.

still wondering
