What I've learned...

in 3 short weeks with my GTAx 550. There's a drought going on around here! The local schools and parks don't water any more than they have to. The grass is alive, barely. Once past the grass roots the dirt is as packed and hard as concrete. Can't recover any targets in those areas because the dirt just falls off the grass roots if you try to pull a plug. Besides even at 4 in the afternoon when I detect (on my way home from work) IT'S HOT!!!! Have found a little moist grass around the trees in the shade but then ya have tree roots. Still if that's all ya can find it's better than sitting at home. Have picked up quite a bit of clad coinage, but have been taking it slow and analysing each target to learn what the detector is telling me. Found out "lawnmower guy" doesn't get off the mower to pick up cans... just chops them up into little pieces that read the same as nickels and some of those scraps are 4 to 6 inches deep. Most of the city parks in my area (Irvine, Ca) are only 30 years old since they were built as the city was developed and grew since incorparation in 1971. Before that it was bean fields and orange groves. Still finding quarters at 5 and 6 inches and when it belltones "quarter" and shows 5 inches, it's a quarter. Plan on hitting some of the neighboring cities which are older after we get some rain... don't remember the last "measurable" rain fall.
Some good might be coming my way. My wife just took a new job. Assistant project coordinator for KB Home builders. IN THE LAND PURCHASING DIVISION!!! Working for the gentleman who is in charge of buying property in the entire southern califonia region, which includes Orange County, Riverside County, San Diego County and Imperial County.... I'm hoping since I know the gentleman also, that I can get permission to hunt the property before construction... Can't hurt to ask!
Sorry for the looooong post but just found this out. The wife wants to take a week off before starting her new job so we are going to visit some old friends in Plano Texas, which according to my atlas is right next door to Garland... Do they do tours at the Garrett plant? That would be great to get to visit the plant.

Hey Bill. Nice to hear a report from someone using a GTAx-550. Every little thing I learn helps. I'll have to live through your posts for now as I had a stumbling block due to my bank (idiots) and will now not be receiving my GTAx-550 until next week likely. I had big plans for this weekend Great news on the potential to hunt targeted building sites. You should be able to access some nice places that way. I've found many native american artifacts (my main hobby right now) in that same manner. Good lucka nd happy hunting Keep me posted on your finds and that detector of yours.

I hate beer can confetti and there's not much you can do about it. But like you, I sure am looking forward to Fall with cooler temperatures and wet dirt. Winter is the best season here in the Southland. If you visit the Garrett facility, tell old Chuck we said hello. HB

Hey Bill nice report on the 550.I usually set my machine to pick items on #4 usually nickels gold and some beaver tails. I never dig on 4.5 because 99 percent it is a pull tab. Some sites nickel will beep at 3.5 As for those newer parks in your area you could always find silver and gold items there. Don't forget about the old churches and old privates houses. Good luck with your machine.

Sounds like your wife's new job could lead you to some goodies. Pursue it.
I'm sure the folks at Garrett would welcome you with open arms. You might check with them ahead of time.
Bill
