What to expect out of an XLT?

Tomorrow I am thinking of sending in an XLT that my brother has had for many years. He says it use to work good back when he first got it.
I tested around with it and the Bullseye 5.3 loop, but I can't really pick up anything over 4" deep in my test coin garden area. The original loop was chewed up and fixed but I don't trust it, so that is why I use the 5.3 bullseye on it.
Should this XLT be able to pick up a quarter pretty easy at 8" with the default coin or C&J preset program? We are talking normal forest type soil, blackish - brownish dirt. Nothing with a high mineral content, etc.. The only way I can pick up deeper is if I really turn up the sensitivity and stuff and by then is is falseing and making a lot of chatter but I can get a slight pickup on that quarter 8" down.

I think something is worng with this XLT, cause I purchased a sunray XL-1 probe and it doesn't have any depth at all on it, I have to literally touch the coin with the probe for it to detect it.
I used another buddies XLT about 4 years ago that had the sunray probe on it and it would pick up a good 3 to 4" away. I just can't remember overall how well the XLT use to work back then when I used it.

This unit is an original spectrum XLT that has never been in for service before. Give me your thoughts on this if you can. Is there such thing as this may need a tune up or something?

You might try this .Turn machine on and let it start up then take battery out while machine is on leave out for a few minutes it should erase short term memory.

Thats how you reboot the machine. If you are using the 5.3 loop, it probably will have trouble down at 8". It would be worth while to send it to White's and have them go through the machine. I had my xlt for 10yrs, and just recently sent it in for service, (Sweet Home Oregon). They fixed it, replaced the spectrum xlt LCD window, replaced the 9.5"loop with a brand new one, replaced some of the electronics such as lcd assembly, spectrum xlt pcb. They tested it inspected it and now its on the way back to me. Price was $67.24 plus $15.00 shipping. You can't even buy a new 9.5 loop for under a hundred bucks. The loop size is usually a pretty good indicator on how deep the machine will go on dime to quarter size targets, if you were picking up the quarter at 8" with the 5.3 loop I would say that aint too bad. Hope this helped. Ron

That makes me a little upset, cause Tony at the whites service center out of Chicago says it is going to be $70 just to look at it :(

I already sent it in, so I guess I am stuck getting billed what they want to charge me.
I would of gladly paid $67.24 plus some to have all the stuff you had done plus a new loop!

So everyone think maybe I am asking to much for the 5.3 loop to pickup coins at 5 to 8"?

It still just doesn't seem right to me for some reason. I still think something is wrong with it so I ultimately sent it in, now I might regret sending it to the service center in chicago. Especially if I would if saved money sending to to the sweet home center instead.

@ronaldj2, good luck with the repairs, I hope it works great for you when you get it back, and thanks for the suggestions.

Even if it costs you $100 bucks or more, the machine is still almost $900 if you were to buy a newone. I sent it right to the factory where they're made, because I read good things about them. I hope your repair isn't that expensive, or maybe doesn't need a repair. Either way I hope for the best.

I use an XLT with the 5.3 Black Max and had problems with the XL-1 probe not getting any depth. I read a forum post last year about the XLT and XL-1 probe, same problem. A fellow posted this:

Set the AC Sensitivity @ 74 - 76 and set the Pre-Amp to 6, try that. I have gotten quarters at 8" and dimes at 6", the probe will get about 3 inches with these settings. Please post your results with these settings. Good Luck and Happy Hunting !!!

Dan

Yeah I tested with the ac and pre-amp at those numbers as well as all around it and at those high sensitivity the probe did better. However you still have to be within about an inch of the coin for it to detect it.
The 5.3 bullseye loop did better as far as depth goes with those settings, and could barely pick up a coin at 8" deep, but by then it was really chattering.

When I hear something from whites and or get it back I will test again and let everyone know how it goes.

you are not going to get the depth with the small coil that you do with the large one, 8" with an xlt and a small coil is alot to ask. You want to use the small coil for very trashy or tight areas

The stock coil is a good deep coil, my XLT had dug small bb sized lead shot at nine inches. I would go back to it. The XLT is a great detector!

Well got mine back today, screen and electronics are brand new as well as the 9.5" loop. Only problem is, my old coil cover doesn't fit anymore. Reason being is the new coil is thicker, but I must say it looks very well made. I am going to try to modify it (coil cover) to get it to fit right. Haven't gone out with it because the weather isn't cooperating. I did fire it up and it is like a new machine. White's really knows how to keep customers happy. Ron
