What's the general consensus of MD on sidewalks?

I ask this and I think I already have the answer. They are public property. If this was a park or such usually you have to inquire further depending on where you live and what park it is. I would love to do the park near me but hmmm I am not really sure it's off limits to MD but I think it is.

I noticed last week they are replacing a lot of sidewalks in my city which is a pretty old. Just in one street above me there was about 100+ feet of dirt to MD where the concrete used to be and it was around an old building. I don't see anyone MD there either.
 
I'm waiting for some sidewalk replacements in my area too. My plan is to buy a reflective vest and hard hat then hit the area right after the workers knock off for the day. Hopefully I'll look like I belong there.

Funny thing is if you did that I bet no one would bother you. Someone would ask you,"What are you doing" You could then say,"I'm taking readings from the ground and making sure everything goes right when the concrete gets poured in" heehee

That Raptor shovel I won is just itching to tear up some of that old ground :devil:
 
In most cities, perhaps all, the sidewalks, terraces and streets are city property. You have every right to be there. Don't ask; as has been discussed on these forums many times the stock CYA bureaucratic answer will often be no. I detect construction sites all the time; they have been doing the road in front of my house this summer and I've been over it a zillion time.

Just use common sense and don't disturb any of the construction work, fill in your holes, don't leave junk, etc.

You're right. I was thinking about calling but between no one knowing what MD is and the bureaucracy of the city they'll say no thinking that I am excavating and doing further work without a permit.

What does CYA stand for? City Y(?) Association

I better get down there later on this morning before they pave it over. It is a private company doing it so you know never know. They could be doing it today.

I got all the sidewalks to myself. Got some old nails :nono: and then I got a strange square tag. I thought it had a C at the bottom. L post it later when I clean it up. I just came back for a pee. It's actually a U shape and I spent 1.5 just on one side. I have two more sides to go. L bring my camera and take some pics. Cya in a byte.

Heres a bunch of pics of area I did today. I did 2/3 of it. I still have one more side to do. L do that tomorrow. I used Ferrous for tone. Noticed that were lots of hits near edge of chain link fence so I stayed away from that :.) I hunted there for about 3.5 hours. U pros prob could've banged it out in half the time, maybe even less. Ground was packed, stony. Raptor worked well. Just have to remember to wear glove on digging hand :.)

I got some old nails, some round thing and the square piece of metal with the hole in it and of course part of a chain link fence. Not exactly going to get published in LT magazine but it was a learning experience. I assumed I would get some old coins with these sidewalks but I guess not. I will finish up with the last piece tomorrow. Most people didn't even bat an eyelash at what I was doing. One women even wished me good luck

Only thing I had X'd out was nails & crowncaps. Also when I started in the morning I had a 2-3 girls in a car and they were watching me for about 20-25 minutes and when they left they started howling coyote yells & yelps out of the car,heehee. Maybe I should make a sexy metal detector calendar for excitable women,heehee.

I detect the tree strips all the time.

I do have to watch for doggie doo and piddle.

I use the excuse (ok a little lie) that I am looking for a lady friends wedding ring that she lost a while back while running and I always ask the neighborhood just to keep things sane.

I learned my lesson a couple years ago when this older man came at me with a rake. He hit me on the back with the rakes handle while I was digging a coin.

I told him I was going to call the police and press charges for assault. He became very nervous and asked me not to call. I said OK and told him that he should never do that again.

He was 85 and I actually made friends with him after talking for a few hours. He then asked me to detect the rest of his property. I found a few silver coins. He is now 88 and still a friend.
 
I did finish the other 1/3 of the sidewalk. I also had 6-7 kids helping me dig. They all were really intrigued about my SE. I had to watch out that none of them stepped on the shaft of it or crushed it with their bikes that they were riding. I found a few pennies and a dime, nothing old.

II did notice a funny thing on this side of the sidewalk as opposed to the other two sides. I had some funny interference. I do know that my pinpointer will interfere if you have near the coil but I had it behind me in my back pocket. I noticed if I did a re noise cancel it would stop or if I shut power and rebooted. It sounded like 2-3 dripping faucets meshed together, blip,blomp,blimp,etc Never heard that sound before. maybe there was an electrical line where I was swinging?
 
I hit sidewalk tearouts all the time, and never "ask" (as if you needed to, to begin with). If you ask, you may just be told "no", by some deskbound bureaucrat, whos image is geeks with shovels, when in fact, you'd most likely have just been ignored and not given a second thought by anyone passing by. Another factor that may influence their "no" is that it's a const. zone. You know how they place a few orange cones at each end of the tearout, and sometimes even a sign that says "sidewalk closed". That's so that when you slip on a bananna peel there, you can't sue them. So of COURSE they're going to tell you "no". Heck, to tell you "yes", they'd probably have to have it on the next city counsel meeting agenda, council-members take a vote, blah blah blah, and by that time, the cement would be poured. Just be discreet and go. Go after 5pm when the workers have cut out for the day.

Most people totally ignored me or thought I was some psychotic fool wasting his time in the sun. My tear-outs just have yellow ribbon around areas that says,"caution" so I just went and did them. Had a blast as it helped a great deal in learning my SE with hours and hours of trial and error. That's the only way to learn it is by putting your time in.
