What's the largest coil....

I think you can get a 12 x 15 inch SEF coil for the F5. You have to call them direct about it as they don't advertise it.

Look up SEF coils on the 'bay and that will point you in the right direction.

I've thought about one of those myself, just for ground coverage mostly, but couldn't picture me swinging it as it would make me too nose heavy.

Good luck,
Mike

Nevermind... just got a reply from Fisher and they tell me the largest available for that model is the 11" DD. Is that enough of a potential increase in depth to warrant getting that to replace my 10" stock coil? Obviously the size isn't much different, but I don't know if the style of coil has anything to do with it (DD vs elliptical)

Fisher makes five coils sizes/types that fit the Fisher F5:

5" round DD
5x10" DD
7" x 11" DD
8" round concentric (comes off Teknetics machines)
10" eliptical (stock coil) concentric.

There are after market coil mfg's that also make coils for the F5. They include:

Deteck Ultimate 13" round DD
SEF 12" x 10" Excelerator Butterfly DD.
NEL Sharp - 5" DD
NEL Sharpshooter - 5.5" x 9.5" DD
NEL Hunter - 12.5" x 8.5" DD
NEL Tornado - 12" x 13" DD
NEL Storm - 13" x 14" DD

So there are lots of coils sizes available for the Fisher F5.

Regards your question about depth, yes, the Fisher 11" DD coil will give you more depth as well as better ground coverage. Probably at least 3" better in most dirt as compared to the stock coil, IF you can maxamize the detector settings to use the bigger coil.

As the coils get bigger, attainable depth ( actuall depth in the ground ) depends on a lot of a factors. Soil mineralization, and EMI will all play a factor into how much more depth a bigger coil will actually achieve in the ground. Bigger coils can be more succeptable to EMI noise, and mineralizations. So site conditions place more limitations on how hot you can run your detector with bigger coils as compared to the smaller sizes. You will find you can run your F5 with hotter settings using the 5" and 5 x10" DD than you can running the stock coil in a lot of site conditions. You will find that you can run the stock coil with hotter settings than you can the 11" DD in many site conditions. But if the site conditions allow it, you can get some good performance out of the bigger coils.

I have all the Fisher made coils for my F5 but mostly use the stock coil and the 11" DD. The 5x10 is on my Eurotek Pro. I've been eyeballing the NEL coils but haven't pulled the trigger on one yet  The European websites have good reviews on those aftermarket coils.

That's great information, Mike. I appreciate your input. I did find some coils on ebay but most were from European countries and I'm a little uneasy with ordering from overseas.... The places I hunt aren't real highly mineralized, but if I get another coil I'd definitely be keeping my stock one anyway so I could always adapt to conditions as they change too depending on where I'm hunting. I'm obviously pretty new to the technologies available in the coils, so that'll give me something to research a little this winter.

One other thing... am I right in understanding that there are both plug-in and screw-in versions of the F5? A friend of mine is a MD dealer and he gets a few of these in on trades from time to time but is not an authorized Fisher dealer. He had mentioned to me a month or so ago to make sure I checked on that before I bought something, but I had never heard that before.

Yep, the early 6.1 version of the F5 had the push in connectors.

The later versions have the screw type connectors. You do need to make sure you order coils with the connector that fits your machine. I think all the SEF and NEL coils are of the screw type connectors.

Only Fisher, to the best of my recollection, offers the choice of connectors.

I read somewhere that SEF was releasing a 5x10 for the Greeks and related units like the F5, in December. I can't find more info on it though.
