What's Your Best Coin Find On Top Of The Ground

Today was my first day out for 2011. I went with my mother and brother to an area in a local park that my mom and I had finished out 2010.

I had found two mercs that day and really felt like there was still some silver left. Today I started out with a small pocket spill containing 2 nickels and 1 penny, all from the early 60's. My next find was a 1943 merc! I found about 9 more coins over the next hour.

I headed over to another area about 100 yards away where there is a soccer practice field. I found a few quarters and one or two other coins. About 15 feet from where one of the soccer goals was located I came across what looked to be a coin. I swiped across it and got a good reading. I picked it up and it was a rosie. It looked at it closer and it was a 1946 silver rosie!! I'm a little stumped that it was laying on top of the ground in an area that during the summer, gets a lot of use. It was pretty wet in that area today so maybe that had something to do with it. Also, I noticed that it looked like someone else may have been digging near the field so I'm thinking that possibly someone had found it and maybe dropped it.

I went over to where my mother and brother were and said "I'm a little reluctant to tell you guys this because it almost sounds like a made up story?". My brother said that he had once found an indian on top of the ground and my mom reminded him of a time when they were detecting an old home site and he saw an old window frame on the ground with a penny sitting on it and it was an indian.

I had seen a guy's You Tube video where he found a V Nickel on top of the ground and I really thought that maybe he had planted in there before filming because it just seems so strange that he would find that in a public park. I think now I finally believe him.

I'm just curious if anyone else has found coins this way.

Have never found any old coins on top of the ground yet, but am constantly amazed at how many modern day coins I find on top of the ground.

I almost always find at least one penny on top of the ground, last time I was out I found a couple of pennies and a nickel, now if I could just find a bunch of dollar coins :detecting:

About 6 years ago out in the wind blow desert I also found a V nickle right on the surface. It was a very sandy area and we figured the wind had a lot to do with it.

A few years back I just bought my first metal detector and was at a fair grounds and hunting in front of the grandstand on a race track. The track was littered with metal and chrome parts and must have been used for a demoIition derby. I was using my X-Terra 50 and the 9" concentric coil. I got signal in the forty range and dug a bolt. While covering the hole I happen to look over about 18" to 24" from the hole and there laid a coin on top of the ground. When I picked up the coin it was a silver 1942 Washington quarter. This was my very first silver coin I had ever found while metal detecting. I would guess that the quarter some how came out of one of the cars used in the demolition derby. I would like to go back to that fair grounds some day with my X-Terra 705 and 6"DD coil which I just purchased in the last couple years.

H.H.

I stopped at Advance Auto Store a couple of years ago to get some parts and saw a dime laying on the floor
whileI was waiting in line at the counter.
I went over and picked it up a stuck in my pocket.
Later I checked it out and it was a 1958 silver dime.
I figured with the economy, folks are starting to put their silver coins back into circulation.

i was detecting at a old homestead here in australia and all that was left was the foundations, the building was that old it must of had a dirt floor because it was very compacted and hard, on my first run i seen a round shape and thought that looks like a coin, then thought nah it cant be, but then my machine went off, i picked it up and there was a 1912 australian silver shilling it had been sunbaking in the middle of nowhere for over 90 years and was only a little faded, scrubbed it with a little bicarb and it came up like new :p
