I thought I would give this new forum a try. The "coin" was a recent find at a S.E. Pennsylvania farmhouse, built 1740. Dimensions are 29mm diameter (1.175 inches) and .065" thick. It is not round, but rather "almost round". Material is copper. It is very flat, no hammer marks, and very smooth. I know this looks like it might be an old large cent (I found two 1808's 1Cent on the same property), but what intrigues me is the carvings on the surface, They were not just punched there, or scratched in. Who ever did this took their time. I am moreinterested in knowing if anyone can recognize the markings. I will send the reverse side on my next posting. NO, there are no other markings, as if to say it once was a coin. Sorry for the blurred photo. I am still getting the hang of this. Thanks! JH

Once again, sorry for the blurred image. Anybody recognize the markings?? - JH

Looks like a Talisman ( good luck token) These are carried for a single purpose, when this comes to pass the Talisman is buried. Not unusual in the area you found it. My girlfriend is looking for her book on Talismen and will try to find out what the symbols mean.

Well I went through our books on Wicca and Runes last night. The problem is that many symbols can be Personalized. I went through the Germanic symbols ( many are very close to the Anglo Saxon Symbols) and I Believe the first one stands for "need" (In Germanic) or Trouble (Anglo-Saxon). The second one is very hard to figure. If it is in one of the many differant Runic alphabets it may be a "Bindrune" Which is two or more Runes that have been superimposed or joined together in some way to form a a message or word. These people took this very seriously. To this day many still use the HEX symbols on Barns or in Houses.
I would treat it with respect, you just never know.

I'm originally from Bristol /Levittown area. Now in Lansdale. I wish I had known about metal detectors back in the day. I know lots of places that would have paid out, but now, for one reason or another, I can't gain access. <img src="/metal/html/cry.gif" border=0 width=40 height=15 alt=":cry"> LOL.

Thanks to all who viewed. You folks are awesome! I guess I will have to treat this one with as much finesse as those live ammo rounds I occasionally dig up! - JH
