WHERE HAVE ALL THE SUSIES GONE?????

D&P-OR

Well-known member
I guess I'm a nut for figures!----SUSAN B. ANTHONY DOLLARS--Were they (another) total & complete waste of taxpayers money?--They never were liked by the public due to confusing them with the quarter & half dollar.--The series started in 1979 & ended in 1999.--In that period, there were only 3 years that they were released into circulation from the 3 mints (1979PDS-1980PDS-1999P&D).----Out of those 3 years--a total of 888,842,452 (888 million,842 thousand,452) Anthony dollars "supposedly" went into circulation.--Even if just a portion of that number went into circulation--why aren't we (the hunters) finding more of them??----Out of 78,468 coins my wife & I have recovered in 6 years--only 6 of them have been Anthony dollars.--That's an average of 1 a year or 1 for every 13,078 coins recovered per year.--I told you I was nuts!----Seriously--what are your comments/ideas/experiences with this coin?--------Del

I think the government has a hard time admitting anything. I doubt that they actually made it into circulation in those numbers, unless you count getting from the mint to the bank as "in circulation". I never used them and I thought they were stupid from the first minute I held one. All this money spent in research and development and any moron could have told them "You can't make a dollar coin the same size as a quarter!!!" Besides, a dollar isn't that much money these days, so if it was released in those quantities, it would be lost proportionately to the lost number of quarters. Therefore, you would have found many, many more! Just my crazy thoughts?

I wish they would have "caugth on" I would rather find a $1.00 than a quarter. I used to get from the bank and spend em, but not enough people used them. The only way to get people to spend them is for the Gov. to stop printing $1.00 bills like Canada did.

I've been thinking a little more on this one. The banks apparently made their orders for the Anthony dollar to the Federal Reserve to fill the demand or perceived demand of the public for this coin. The public never had any real demand for this coin (it just didn't fly). So evidently there wasn't all that great of a continued amount of orders from the banks to the Federal Reserve for the Anthony dollar. So all of those Anthony's that "went into circulation" never really went into circulation at all.----SO WHERE ARE THEY???? I don't think they are in the banks--they MUST be setting in some dark, dusty corner at the Federal Reserve.---AREN'T YOU GLAD WE'RE RICH TAX PAYERS???---Well over 800 million coins is a lot of coins (for that time period)!---There seems to be millions upon millions of Anthony dollars that are unaccounted for (at least from a so called "circulation" standpoint). Whatever happens to them now??---WHEREVER they're at---I guess they will set there till they "rot". -----Maybe I should write my congressman and ask--I'm sure they could explain that one away to!

Where have all the answers gone as to why all the Susies are gone???? haaaaa-----I'm goin to bed!!

They aren't all gone, I get dollar coins from the breakroom change machines at work. Our vending machines are set up to accept them. By the way, the new gold colored dollars look fake or like chocolate candy coins.

Hi! Good question. I take the PATH train every day from Hoboken to NYC and one of the places that they ended up was in the machines that give you change from your $5 bill when going through the turnstile. I was surprised to see them the first time - they are mixed in with the newer gold colored coins which are apparently the same size as the SBA dollars. I would imagine that change machines around the country use them as well as maybe casinos for the $1 slots. As to where the change machines get their stock of clad dollars from is another good question. For that matter, I wonder where all the clad Kennedy halfs and IKE dollars are............anyone know?
